WR-ALC handles programmed depot maintenance and modernization for the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III (the strategic airlift fleet), the C-130H/J Hercules (the entire C-130 sustainment line), the F-15 Eagle/F-15E Strike Eagle/F-15EX Eagle II (all F-15 variants), the U-2 Dragon Lady, and a long list of avionics/electronics warfare/special-mission systems. Balfour Beatty Communities manages on-base across all three installations. Waitlists 1-4 months on most areas. Lackland has older and newer housing (newer phases recommended). Randolph housing is decent and a quick walk to BX/Commissary. Fort Sam Houston housing is mixed — older historic stock plus newer phases. Off-base: Schertz, Cibolo, and Selma (between Randolph and Sam) are the consensus best for families — newer subdivisions, top-rated SCUC ISD and Comal ISD schools. Live Oak and Universal City are closer/cheaper alternatives. Helotes (NW San Antonio, between Lackland and the Hill Country) serves Lackland with Northside ISD. Boerne (Hill Country, 30 min NW) is the premium suburban move with Boerne ISD.
Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUC) and Comal ISD are the consensus best for military families — Clemens HS, Steele HS, and Smithson Valley HS are well-rated. Judson ISD is mixed. Northside ISD (NW San Antonio, Helotes/Leon Valley) is large but has strong schools (Brandeis HS, O'Connor HS). North East ISD (central/N San Antonio, Churchill HS, Roosevelt HS) is similar. San Antonio ISD (central) is uneven. No DoDEA at JBSA.
BMT cycle at Lackland runs continuously (eight weeks per class, multiple flights weekly), which makes Lackland MTI and support-staff schedules pretty predictable but high-tempo. AETC HQ and Randolph squadrons run a daily flying-training rhythm with scheduled deployments minimal. 16 AF (Cyber) at Lackland has a more deployment- and crisis-response-oriented tempo. BAMC clinical rotations and METC training schedules run hospital hours plus clinical call. Each installation has its own command culture — JBSA HQ provides garrison support but the wings/commands run independently.
If your career field belongs at JBSA, the assignment is structurally favorable on cost-of-living, MTF access (BAMC is genuinely outstanding), and quality-of-life. San Antonio is a real city with real food and real culture. The Lackland BMT cycle is its own ecosystem — if you're an MTI or BMT support, the cadence will define your tour.
Hunt manages on-base — short waitlists for family housing. Off-base: Warner Robins (immediately adjacent to base, Houston County Schools — the convenience move, deepest inventory) is the consensus default; Bonaire (10 min south, Houston County Schools — quieter suburban) is the family move; Perry (20 min south, Houston County Schools — small-town quieter alternative) works for families wanting a slower pace; Macon (30 min north, Bibb County Schools — urban, more affordable per dollar but Bibb schools rate lower than Houston) is the urban move for families who prioritize Macon’s downtown revival over school ratings; Centerville (10 min west, Houston County Schools) is a smaller adjacent community.
Houston County School District (Warner Robins, Bonaire, Perry, Centerville) is consistently among the top-rated districts in Georgia and the consensus military-family choice. Veterans HS, Houston County HS, and Northside HS are the catchment options. Bibb County Schools (Macon) rates lower across most metrics. Several private schools in the area (Tattnall Square Academy, First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, Westfield School in Perry) are options for families willing to pay tuition. No DoDEA.

The active-duty/civilian workforce mix at Robins is heavily civilian — squadron culture is institutional and program-focused, very different from a fighter or maneuver base.
