DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Fort Leavenworth vs USAG Poland

Army, KS vs Army

The Intel

Fort Leavenworth: "Where Majors Go to Get Smarter (and the Prison Stays)." USAG Poland: "The Army's Newest Base, Where the Host Nation Actually Likes You." Assignment roulette, and your happiness is the ball.

Fort Leavenworth: Kansas City 35 minutes away. The catch: Kansas humidity in summer. USAG Poland: Low cost of living in a modern European city. The catch: Still establishing amenities and support services. Both run cheap — your BAH pockets actual savings here, which in the military is rarer than a perfect PT score. Your off-post reality: Leavenworth, KS versus Poznan, Poland. Both have their argument. Neither will make it on your behalf. Climate duel: Hot humid summers, cold winters at Fort Leavenworth versus Cold winters with snow, warm summers, distinct four seasons at USAG Poland. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season.

Two Army installations where the assignment system is a roulette wheel — your marriage, your savings account, and your next five years as the stakes.

Housing
Fort LeavenworthOn-post housing is some of the best in the Army — historic brick quarters for field-grade and above along "colonels row." Newer family housing also available. Off-post in Leavenworth and Lansing is affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. Many CGSC families live on post for the community.
USAG PolandNew on-post housing expanding at Camp Kosciuszko. Off-post in Poznan with OHA — modern apartments $800-$1,400 for spacious flats. Excellent public transit. Stare Miasto, Jezyce, Wilda neighborhoods popular.
Spouse Employment
Fort LeavenworthLimited locally, but Kansas City (35 min) has an excellent and diverse job market — finance, healthcare, tech, and government. Many CGSC spouses are professionals who commute to KC or work remote. The CGSC community has strong spouse networking.
USAG PolandSOFA on-post positions growing. Poznan has tech, universities, international firms. Remote work viable. English teaching in high demand. Young university city.
Medical
Fort LeavenworthMunson Army Health Center — primary care and limited specialty services. Not a hospital. Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth handles emergencies. Kansas City (35 min) has world-class medical care — University of Kansas Health System and Saint Luke's.
USAG PolandGarrison clinic for primary care. Landstuhl (flight) for complex care. Poznan University Hospital modern and capable. Polish healthcare affordable and high quality. Medevac to Landstuhl for serious cases.
Gate Commute
Fort LeavenworthGrant Avenue gate and Sherman Avenue gate — minimal traffic. This is a small post. The KC commute on I-70/K-7 is straightforward — 30-40 min depending on traffic. Morning commute into KC is manageable.
USAG PolandCamp Kosciuszko within Poznan city limits — no remote commute. Poznan trams/buses clean, reliable, cheap. Many families skip car ownership.
