Fort Huachuca: "Spooks, Drones, and Birdwatchers (Seriously)." NSA Mid-South: "Where the Navy Does Paperwork Near the Birthplace of Rock and Roll." Different branches, same dawning realization: the duty station changed you more than you changed it.
What the assignment brief skips: at Fort Huachuca, the real issue is Very remote — Tucson 75 min away. At NSA Mid-South, it's Millington is a small suburb. What they'll pitch you: Fort Huachuca — Mountain views and hiking. NSA Mid-South — Memphis 30 minutes away — BBQ capital. Both run cheap — your BAH pockets actual savings here, which in the military is rarer than a perfect PT score. Fort Huachuca's forecast: Desert — hot summers, mild winters, monsoon season. NSA Mid-South's: Hot & humid summers, mild winters. Pack for both. Complain about both. That's the tradition.
Two bases, two branches, and the universal military truth: wherever you are, someone from the other branch is convinced their assignment is harder. They will tell you. At the bar. At length.
