MOS COMPARISON

350L vs 270A

Attaché Technician (USA) vs Legal Administrator (USA)

Intel

Two Army MOS codes that both got the "Army Strong" pitch and received very different interpretations of what that means every morning.

AAR: 350L vs 270A. Sustain (350L): the honest part: Foreign Area work requires a level of intellectual engagement and self-directed learning that not everyone wants to sustain across a career. Sustain (270A): the relationship with the Staff Judge Advocate is the defining factor in tour quality — a good SJA who respects the warrant function makes this an excellent job. Improve (both): the part where the career counselor explains any of this before you sign. One of these comes with calluses. The other comes with carpal tunnel. Same VA claim eventually.

Recruiter vs. Reality

The pitch versus what people who actually did the job report back.

350LAttaché Technician
What the Recruiter Says

Develop deep regional expertise as a Foreign Area Officer technician, advising commanders on culture, politics, and foreign military capabilities.

What It's Actually Like

The 350L warrant is the regional and language expert who has put in the years to develop genuine area expertise — this is not a first-assignment specialty, this is a career built on language training, in-country experience, and genuine study of a specific region's military, political, and cultural landscape. You'll work at senior echelons as an advisor on foreign military capabilities and regional dynamics, attend the Defense Language Institute and potentially in-country language immersion, and develop relationships with foreign military counterparts that take years to build and are genuinely strategic assets. The honest part: Foreign Area work requires a level of intellectual engagement and self-directed learning that not everyone wants to sustain across a career. The PCS shuffle can disrupt the regional continuity you're trying to build. DIA, EUCOM, PACOM, CENTCOM, and the IC community all have appetite for your expertise post-service. This is a niche career that suits a specific personality type extremely well.

270ALegal Administrator
What the Recruiter Says

Manage legal operations, court-martial proceedings, and military justice administration as a specialist warrant officer. A unique legal career in uniform with transferable administrative skills.

What It's Actually Like

The 270A warrant is the glue that holds Judge Advocate legal operations together — you manage the administrative and operational functions of a JAG office so that the attorneys can focus on the law. Court-martial preparation, legal assistance program management, evidence handling, claims processing, and the voluminous record-keeping requirements of military justice all flow through you. You will know more about the procedural mechanics of military law than most junior JAG officers, and you'll spend years watching butter bar attorneys figure out things you mastered three assignments ago. The relationship with the Staff Judge Advocate is the defining factor in tour quality — a good SJA who respects the warrant function makes this an excellent job. The civilian paralegal and legal administration market can absorb you, but the military legal specialty has limited direct civilian translation compared to some other warrant fields. The job is rewarding if you find meaning in making justice processes work correctly.
