The 2W0X1's TAPS brief goes like this: "I spent four years doing — " the esprit de corps is real and specific — AMMO troops take care of each other in ways that reflect the shared experience of working with things that explode. The 1A2X1's version: "My experience included — " the airdrop missions are every bit as cool as advertised — HALO drops, LAPES, container delivery systems. The transition counselor treats both with the same encouraging nod, which is either reassuring or deeply noncommittal. IYAAYAS (If You Ain't AMMO You Ain't S***) is not ironic. The culture is real, the expertise is technical, and the defense contractor munitions programs actively recruit people who've actually handled the hardware. Also the Air Force will not make you live in a fighting position while you do it.”
IYAAYAS is the culture and the culture is strong in proportion to the isolation, because munitions storage areas are always in the corner of the base nearest the perimeter fence and furthest from anything convenient. The work is physical, safety-critical, and performed in conditions that range from inconvenient to genuinely difficult. Inventory counts in the rain at midnight are a tradition, not an accident. The esprit de corps is real and specific — AMMO troops take care of each other in ways that reflect the shared experience of working with things that explode. You will load cargo at 2 AM on a flight line that is either freezing or sweltering depending on the season, after working a 12-hour shift, for a flight that departs in three hours. Weight-and-balance math at altitude becomes second nature so quickly you'll be doing it in your sleep. The airdrop missions are every bit as cool as advertised — HALO drops, LAPES, container delivery systems. The travel is real but you see airfields, not countries; you'll know the inside of the Rota terminal better than the town of Rota. Your back will file a formal complaint around year four. The camaraderie on a C-17 loadmaster crew is the real compensation package.
