The Air Force promised both of these were "cutting-edge careers." At least the base amenities don't disappoint.
Plot the entire military career spectrum on a line. Put 2A3X2 here: the two-seat F-15E is more complex than single-seat variants and the Strike Eagle mission adds systems depth. Put 2A6X1 here: engine swaps happen in the middle of flight line operations in conditions the technical order writers did not consult a meteorologist about. The distance between these two points is the reason "military experience" is an insufficient descriptor. Two jobs united only by a shared conviction that the other one somehow has it easier.

F-15 maintenance is prestigious within the maintenance community and the aircraft is genuinely excellent. The two-seat F-15E is more complex than single-seat variants and the Strike Eagle mission adds systems depth. Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia is a consistently desirable assignment. Kadena AB in Okinawa is either a dream assignment or family-separation duty depending on your situation. The aircraft is aging but well-supported. Crew chief pride in the F-15 community is real and the culture reflects the platform's reputation.

You'll also never again be impressed by any car engine.”
Jet engines are loud, hot, covered in hydraulic fluid and residual oil, and you will be too. Engine swaps happen in the middle of flight line operations in conditions the technical order writers did not consult a meteorologist about. The test cell is where you run engines to full power in an enclosed facility designed for that purpose and your hearing protection is load-bearing PPE. GE Aviation and Pratt & Whitney do actively recruit experienced military propulsion maintainers and the compensation is genuinely competitive. Your hearing loss VA claim will be filed in conjunction with theirs. Eglin, Langley, and Hill are decent bases; Cannon, Minot, and Holloman have their own relationship with the phrase 'quality of life.'
