Two Army MOS codes that both got the "Army Strong" pitch and received very different interpretations of what that means every morning.
Two promises walked into a recruiting station. The first: "manage legal operations, court-martial proceedings, and military justice administration as a specialist warrant officer." The second: "analyze satellite imagery, aerial photography." Both promises were technically true in the way that "water is involved in surfing" is technically true about the Navy. 270A reality: the relationship with the Staff Judge Advocate is the defining factor in tour quality — a good SJA who respects the warrant function makes this an excellent job. 35G reality: feature extraction, change detection, mensuration, pattern-of-life analysis, production of intelligence products that go into briefings and targeting packages. This is the part of the comparison where a recruiter would change the subject to the signing bonus.

The 270A warrant is the glue that holds Judge Advocate legal operations together — you manage the administrative and operational functions of a JAG office so that the attorneys can focus on the law. Court-martial preparation, legal assistance program management, evidence handling, claims processing, and the voluminous record-keeping requirements of military justice all flow through you. You will know more about the procedural mechanics of military law than most junior JAG officers, and you'll spend years watching butter bar attorneys figure out things you mastered three assignments ago. The relationship with the Staff Judge Advocate is the defining factor in tour quality — a good SJA who respects the warrant function makes this an excellent job. The civilian paralegal and legal administration market can absorb you, but the military legal specialty has limited direct civilian translation compared to some other warrant fields. The job is rewarding if you find meaning in making justice processes work correctly.

The NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) is one of the largest employers of GEOINT analysts in the world and recruits directly from this MOS. Defense contractors and cleared mapping companies are a second pipeline. The TS/SCI clearance plus GEOINT skills generates a resume that can expect $80-100K in the defense contractor market.”
You look at imagery — satellite, aerial, UAV-collected — and determine what's there, what's changed, what it means. Feature extraction, change detection, mensuration, pattern-of-life analysis, production of intelligence products that go into briefings and targeting packages. The work requires a specific kind of visual acuity and analytical patience: the ability to look at imagery systematically, identify what's significant, and produce an assessment that is accurate and actionable. Your software environment is ESRI, ArcGIS, SOCET GXP, and specialized GEOINT tools that you won't find at Best Buy. The intelligence community significance of this work is real — GEOINT supports operations at every level, and the demand for trained imagery analysts is consistent across DIA, NGA, CIA, and the defense contractor ecosystem that supports all of them. NGA in particular recruits aggressively from military GEOINT backgrounds. The transition from Army 35G to NGA or a supporting contractor is one of the more direct career pipelines in the intelligence world. Your TS/SCI clearance is the foundation. Your analytical experience is the structure.
