The 0111 wakes up at the same time and faces this: nobody respects admin until something they care about requires admin to fix it — then you are briefly the most important person in the building. Both are in the military. Both showed up. The similarity stops being useful around there. The only thing these two branches share is a health insurance provider and a general sense of frustration.

It's the closest thing to special operations in the Marine Corps without going MARSOC.”
BRC has a 50-60% attrition rate and the pipeline is 6+ months before you even hit a battalion. You'll be cold, wet, and exhausted in ways infantry Marines can't imagine. The operational tempo post-Force Design 2030 is higher than ever — recon battalions absorbed the sniper mission (0322), gained new boat companies, and are the cornerstone of the stand-in force concept. The swimming never stops. Your knees and shoulders will pay the price. But the capability and brotherhood in a recon platoon is unmatched in conventional forces.

You will become intimately familiar with MOL, MCTFS, unit diaries, and the specific formatting requirements of every administrative document the Marine Corps has ever invented. You are the person everyone comes to when their pay is wrong, their leave was rejected, or their award package disappeared into the administrative void. Nobody respects admin until something they care about requires admin to fix it — then you are briefly the most important person in the building. The work is repetitive, detail-intensive, and chronically thankless, but the hours are genuinely better than most MOSs and you will never hump a mortar baseplate up a mountain. The civilian translation is strong for office management, HR assistant, and government administrative positions. If you can navigate the Marine Corps personnel system without losing your mind, corporate HR will feel like a vacation.
The Real Life

Reconnaissance and surveillance patrols, dive training, jump operations, close quarters battle drills, and inter-agency coordination. The operational tempo is high and the training is constant. You are expected to be a subject matter expert in multiple disciplines.

Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC) at Camp Pendleton is one of the most demanding military training pipelines. 12+ weeks of amphibious reconnaissance, patrolling, diving, and endurance. Attrition rate is 50-70%. Pre-BRC screening (known as BRPC) weeds out many candidates before the course even starts.

The recruiter will sell the elite status and it's deserved — BRC is genuinely brutal and the capabilities you develop are world-class. What they won't mention: the selection process is designed to break you, and most volunteers don't make it. The operational tempo is relentless and the toll on relationships and personal life is severe. If you make it through, you join one of the most respected communities in special operations. The post-military career options are strong: contracting, three-letter agencies, corporate security consulting. But the lifestyle demands everything while you're in.
