MOS COMPARISON

0311 vs 11B

Rifleman (USMC) vs Infantryman (USA)

Intel

The Army has more people. The Marines have more per-capita intensity. Choose your fighter.

For the record: recruiting materials for 0311 claim service members will join the most elite fighting force on earth. Materials for 11B claim they'll be the backbone of the Army. Testimony from actual service members paints a different picture. 0311: ' Field day is every Thursday and you WILL be inspected, and your room WILL fail, and you WILL do it again until your drill instructor's ghost is satisfied, which is never. 11B: your 'leadership development' is standing in formation waiting for someone to get yelled at for something you also did but didn't get caught doing. The committee will recess to process this. Two career fields that share a country and a commitment and absolutely nothing else that matters on a Tuesday.

Recruiter vs. Reality

The pitch versus what people who actually did the job report back.

0311Rifleman
What the Recruiter Says

As a Rifleman, you'll join the most elite fighting force on earth. Every Marine is a warrior first, and as an 03, you ARE the tip of the spear. You'll master amphibious warfare, urban combat, and small unit tactics that forge leaders Fortune 500 companies fight to hire.

What It's Actually Like

You will carry things that are heavy to places that are far, then carry them back, then do it again because someone in the chain of command said 'good training.' Field day is every Thursday and you WILL be inspected, and your room WILL fail, and you WILL do it again until your drill instructor's ghost is satisfied, which is never. The 'tip of the spear' means you're also the tip of every working party, every police call, and every detail that nobody else wants. You are somehow always on duty. Your MRE opinions are your personality, and every Marine you ever meet will ask which flavor you'd trade your soul for. The brotherhood is real. The suffering is real. The Crayola jokes are old but you still laugh because it beats crying. Semper Fi means forever, and so does your ibuprofen prescription.

11BInfantryman
What the Recruiter Says

As an Infantryman, you'll be the backbone of the Army. You'll lead soldiers in ground combat operations, master weapons systems, and develop unmatched leadership skills that translate directly to civilian careers in law enforcement, security management, and executive leadership.

What It's Actually Like

You will spend approximately 4,000% more time cleaning weapons than firing them. Your 'leadership development' is standing in formation waiting for someone to get yelled at for something you also did but didn't get caught doing. 'Master weapons systems' means you'll carry an M4 that was manufactured when Britney Spears was still relevant and learn to field strip it in your sleep — which is good, because you won't be getting much of it. The civilian translation of your resume is 'I can sleep standing up, carry things that weigh more than my future, and I have extremely strong opinions about which MRE is the best.' Your knees will file their own VA claim. You'll hate every second of it and talk about it for the rest of your life like it was the best thing that ever happened to you. Because it was.

The Real Life

Same dimensions, side by side. 0311 on the left, 11B on the right.

Daily Life
0311

PT at 0530, training, ranges, field exercises, and garrison duties. Marines do more with less — expect older equipment and creative solutions. Liberty is earned, not given. Weekends are yours unless you're in the field, on duty, or your unit has been secured.

11B

PT at 0630, formation, weapons maintenance, ranges, and tactical drills. Most days end by 1700 but field problems run 72+ hours. Garrison time is heavy on maintenance and cleaning — you will mop floors that are already clean.

Training / School
0311

SOI (School of Infantry) at Camp Pendleton or Camp Geiger is 8 weeks after boot camp. Intense, no-nonsense infantry training. Live fire, patrolling, squad tactics, and weapons employment. The instructors are combat veterans and the standards are high.

11B

OSUT at Fort Moore (GA) is 22 weeks of combined Basic and Infantry training. High-intensity, high-washout environment. Land navigation, live fire exercises, and forced marches. The last few weeks are the best — squad live fires and a final field exercise.

Physical Demands
0311

Extreme. The Marine infantry standard is higher than any other branch. Humps (ruck marches) with 80-100+ lbs, combat conditioning, and constant physical training. Your body is the weapon system.

11B

Extremely high. Rucking 35-70 lbs over rough terrain, room clearing, casualty drags, and operating on minimal sleep. Your knees, back, and shoulders will take a beating.

The Honest Truth
0311

Marine infantry is the hardest version of the hardest job in the military. The recruiter will tell you about honor, courage, and commitment — and the Corps delivers on that promise. What they won't tell you: peacetime garrison is mind-numbing, promotion is painfully slow (the Marine Corps is the smallest service competing for the same ranks), and the facilities and equipment are often the oldest in the DoD. The esprit de corps is real and unmatched — being a Marine infantryman is an identity, not just a job. But the civilian translation is thin unless you stack education and certs while in. Plan your exit strategy from day one and you'll join the long line of successful 0311 veterans. Wait until your EAS to figure it out and you'll struggle.

11B

The recruiter will tell you infantry is the backbone of the Army, and that part is true. What they won't tell you is that peacetime infantry is 80% maintenance and cleaning, promotion is glacially slow because everyone has the same MOS, and your body will age faster than your peers in other fields. The camaraderie is unmatched — you will form bonds that last a lifetime — but the day-to-day can be mind-numbing between field rotations. If you want to be an infantryman, go all-in on schools and tabs, because that's what separates the ones who love it from the ones who count down their contract.
