Holloman AFB vs Kadena AB

Air Force, NM vs Air Force

The Intel

Holloman AFB: "Drones, F-16s, and the Loneliest Taco Bell in America." Kadena AB: "The Biggest Pacific Base With the Smallest Gate Traffic Patience." One shows up in the recruiter's slideshow. The other shows up in your therapist's notes.

Holloman AFB: White Sands and Cloudcroft nearby. The catch: Alamogordo is small and remote. Kadena AB: Okinawan culture and beaches. The catch: Typhoon season. Holloman AFB runs low cost of living. Kadena AB runs medium. The difference is whether your spouse works because they want to or because the landlord left a voicemail. Your off-post reality: Alamogordo, NM versus Chatan, Okinawa, Japan. Both have their argument. Neither will make it on your behalf. Climate duel: Desert — hot dry summers, mild winters at Holloman AFB versus Subtropical — hot humid summers, mild winters, typhoon season at Kadena AB. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season.

Pick your adventure. Or don't — the Air Force will pick it for you, and your preference was filed under "noted and irrelevant."

Kadena ABOn-base housing — family towers and single-family. Waitlists 3-6 months. Off-base in Chatan, Okinawa City, Yomitan — OHA covers most rents. Japanese apartments are smaller than stateside.
Spouse Employment
Holloman AFBVery limited. Alamogordo economy is military and tourism. White Sands Missile Range has some civilian positions. Remote work is the primary option for professional spouses.
Kadena ABSOFA restricts off-base Japanese employment. On-base positions available — NAF, AAFES, DoDEA. Remote work for US employers increasingly common.

Tax & Domicile
State income tax
Holloman AFBNew Mexico: graduated 1.7%-5.9% (top bracket applies to taxable income over $210K single / $315K MFJ for 2024 per NM Tax & Revenue Dept).
Kadena ABN/A locally — US-Japan SOFA exempts US military pay from Japanese income tax. SCRA/MSRRA preserve stateside state-of-legal-residence. SMs typically retain CONUS SLR.
Sales tax
Holloman AFBNM uses Gross Receipts Tax instead of sales tax. Alamogordo combined GRT rate ~8.0% (state + local). Legal incidence on seller but passes through to consumer. Tax & Revenue Dept publishes quarterly Location Code map.
Kadena ABJapanese consumption tax 10% (8% reduced rate on food/non-alcoholic beverages). On-base AAFES and commissary purchases not subject to Japanese consumption tax. Off-base purchases above ¥5,000 may be eligible for tax-free shopping at participating merchants with SOFA ID.
Vehicle reg
Holloman AFBNM MVD passenger registration: 1-year $27-$62 or 2-year $54-$124 depending on weight/value. Liability minimum 25/50/10. Otero County MVD office in Alamogordo handles registration. No annual safety inspection in NM.
Kadena ABJapanese SOFA vehicle registration (Y-plate/yobi-plate system) — vehicles registered through the installation Pass and Registration office, with mandatory annual JCI (Japan Compulsory Insurance) and biennial Shaken inspection (vehicle safety/emissions/roadworthiness inspection equivalent — the structural Japanese vehicle-ownership cost driver). Shaken can be done at base auto-hobby shops or off-base Japanese inspection facilities. Used Japanese kei cars (yellow plate) and standard cars (white plate) are the typical SOFA purchases; new car prices are high. Left-hand traffic; SOFA driver license issued through Pass and Registration after orientation.
Holloman AFB · Domicile Play
SCRA preserves SLR; MSRRA extends to spouses. NM's 5.9% top bracket makes no-tax-state SLR (TX is the geographically convenient option from Holloman; FL/TN/WA also work) a meaningful pickup at senior NCO and O-grades. El Paso is 90 min away and the cross-border move is common.
Kadena AB · Domicile Play
OCONUS doesn’t change SLR. Most SMs retain stateside SLR through Kadena tours. Japan does not tax US military pay under SOFA. The Status of Forces Agreement (1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, with the implementing SOFA) provides the legal framework for the relationship between SOFA-status personnel and Japanese jurisdiction.

The Read

What nobody bothers to tell you until you arrive.

Holloman AFB

Holloman is two parallel training pipelines on one flightline. The 49th Wing has historically been the F-16 Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals (IFF / Fighter Lead-In) home — the 8th Fighter Squadron flies F-16s as the Lead-In Fighter Training course for new fighter pilots transitioning from UPT toward MWS B-courses. Per af.mil, the wing also hosts the 314th Fighter Squadron in the F-16 IFF role and absorbed F-22 Raptor Formal Training Unit responsibilities after Hurricane Michael displaced the FTU from Tyndall in 2018 — the 7th Fighter Squadron stands up the F-22 B-course mission at Holloman as part of the FTU split with JB Langley-Eustis. Verify current squadron makeup against the wing's PA office press releases. The other pipeline is MQ-9 Reaper: the 49th Operations Group's 6th Attack Squadron and 9th Attack Squadron run MQ-9 Formal Training, producing pilots and sensor operators for the operational AFCENT and PACAF Reaper enterprise. T-38C Talons fly here as adversary air and AT-38 lead-in. The German Air Force Flying Training Center — which trained Luftwaffe Tornado crews at Holloman for over two decades — officially ended its presence at Holloman in 2019, returning training to Germany. That departure removed a unique on-base international community that older Holloman PCS stories will still reference. The local reality: Alamogordo (35,000 population) is a small desert town in the Tularosa Basin; White Sands National Park is 15 minutes away and genuinely surreal; Cloudcroft (30 min east, up into the Sacramento Mountains at 8,600 ft) is a pine-forest weekend escape. El Paso (90 min south on US-54) is the nearest real metro for shopping, airport connectivity (ELP), and amenities. New Mexico has a 1.7-5.9% graduated income tax — no-tax-state SLR (TX is right there) is the senior-NCO and officer play.

Kadena AB

Kadena is the largest USAF combat wing in the Pacific and the structural cornerstone of US air power in the INDOPACOM theater. The 18th Wing is the host operational wing — historically the largest single combat wing in the Air Force by aircraft and personnel inventory, and structurally responsible for forward presence, air superiority, air mobility, and combat search and rescue operations across the Pacific. The 18 WG fleet has been in transition: the F-15C/D Eagles that defined Kadena for decades (44 F-15C/D in the 18th Wing’s 44th and 67th Fighter Squadrons) began their phased retirement and departure from Kadena in 2022; the Air Force has rotated F-22 Raptors, F-15E Strike Eagles, F-35A Lightning II, and F-16 Fighting Falcons through Kadena on rotational TDY deployments while the Pacific Air Forces force-structure decision for permanent Kadena replacement aircraft remained under deliberation through 2024–2025. The KC-135R Stratotanker fleet at the 909th Air Refueling Squadron continues operating from Kadena. The 18 WG E-3 Sentry AWACS squadron, the 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron, was inactivated; AWACS coverage routes from Tinker rotations and rotational deployments. The 33rd Rescue Squadron operates HH-60W Jolly Green II combat search and rescue helicopters. The 353rd Special Operations Wing at Kadena is the AFSOC wing responsible for special-operations aviation in the Pacific — operating MC-130J Commando II, AC-130J Ghostrider (recent additions), and CV-22B Osprey for SOF infiltration/exfiltration/air refueling support across INDOPACOM. The 733rd Air Mobility Squadron handles strategic airlift transit. US Forces Japan-Okinawa Area Coordinator support, plus a substantial intel/cyber/communications footprint, round out the installation profile. Career signal: rotational fighter aircrew across F-22/F-15E/F-35A/F-16 communities (Pacific-aligned currency), KC-135 boom/pilot, 353 SOW AFSOC career fields, rescue (PJ/HH-60), Pacific-theater intel/cyber/comms, and joint INDOPACOM staff at the wing and component levels. The honest local picture: Okinawa is structurally the closest US military forward base to Taiwan (~700 km), the East China Sea, the Senkaku Islands (under continuous PRC pressure), and the strategic flashpoints of the First Island Chain. INDOPACOM operational tempo is structurally the highest among CONUS-equivalent overseas theaters in the 2020s — the Taiwan Strait crisis dynamics, the PRC PLAAF/PLAN exercises around the Senkakus, the North Korea provocations, and the broader US-PRC strategic competition all generate continuous wing tempo. Okinawa is a Ryukyuan-cultural region geographically and historically distinct from mainland Japan — pre-1879 the Ryukyu Kingdom was its own polity, and Okinawa was returned to Japanese administration only in 1972 after the 1945–1972 US occupation/administration period. The relationship between the US military and Okinawan civilian population is structurally complicated and politically sensitive — the 1995 incident, the post-2004 helicopter crash, the Futenma replacement facility debate (Camp Schwab/Henoko construction), and the structural presence of ~70% of US bases-in-Japan footprint on Okinawa create ongoing political tensions. Off-base behavior matters more here than at most OCONUS bases. SOFA driving is a different paradigm — left-hand traffic, ETSU SOFA license, regional traffic enforcement, and the structural compactness of Okinawan roads create a meaningful adjustment period. DoDEA-Pacific schools are well-established. Typhoon season (June–November) is structural — you will ride out multiple major typhoons during a 3-year tour.

Real Talk

What you’ll actually deal with. The structured table above is the brief — this is the back-channel.

Holloman AFB
HOUSING

On-base privatized housing (Balfour Beatty) has short waitlists by AF standards. Off-base, Alamogordo proper (10 min) is closest and cheapest; La Luz (15 min north) is a small village with a slightly more rural feel; Tularosa (20 min north) is similar small-town quiet. The high desert is genuinely dry — drainage and roof loads matter less than in humid climates but UV and windblown grit are real factors for vehicle and exterior maintenance. Cloudcroft (30 min, mountain) is not a realistic daily commute for most.

SCHOOLS

Alamogordo Public Schools (Alamogordo HS is the main public option) are adequate but not standout. NMSU-Alamogordo is a real spouse-degree-completion option at in-state pricing. No DoDEA. For families with specific academic-acceleration needs the options are thin; some military families home-school or drive to El Paso for private/charter options.

COMMAND CLIMATE

49 WG runs two distinct training cultures (manned-fighter IFF/FTU and MQ-9 FTU) plus T-38 adversary support. IFF and B-course schedules are student-class-driven with predictable weekly cadence. MQ-9 FTU runs continuous shift operations. The Luftwaffe departure in 2019 reshaped the base social culture significantly — the GAF community had been a meaningful presence for two decades. Current wing identity is settling around its manned-fighter FTU and Reaper FTU dual mission.

BOTTOM LINE

A training-wing assignment with two parallel B-course pipelines and an unmatched outdoor backyard (White Sands, Cloudcroft, the broader Tularosa Basin). The trade is small-town Alamogordo and the 90-minute El Paso run for real amenities.

Kadena AB
HOUSING

On-base housing is large — family towers (Kadena West Side, Banyan Tree Towers, Stearley Heights, Naha) and single-family units. Family housing waitlists run 3–6 months historically; the 18 WG/USFJ housing posture varies with current OPTEMPO and tenant unit fluctuations. Off-base housing market: Chatan (Sunabe Seawall area, immediately west of Kadena Gate 1, dense American community, walkable to American Village/Mihama and the seawall — premium location, mid-to-high rent) is the consensus best off-base move; Okinawa City (Goya, Koza area — immediately east of Kadena, older Okinawan neighborhoods, mid-range rent, more cultural-Okinawa feel) is the immersion move; Yomitan (15 min north — quieter, more rural, premium beaches at Cape Zampa) is the family-quieter move; Kitanakagusuku/Kitanakagusuku Village (10 min south, the planned American-foreign-resident community at the Foster Heights area) is a premium suburban move; Yonabaru/Nanjo (south, 30 min from base) is the more remote option. OHA covers most rents; furnished rentals are widely available; Japanese landlord administration involves the agent (fudosanya) as intermediary. House Hunting Trip (HHT) before family travel is structurally important.

SCHOOLS

DoDEA-Pacific schools on base — Kadena Elementary School, Kadena Middle School, Kadena High School (the largest DoDEA-Pacific high school), Stearley Heights Elementary, Bob Hope Primary School, Amelia Earhart Intermediate School. Well-resourced and well-established American school system on base. Some families choose Japanese schools or international schools (Okinawa Christian School International, OCSI; Okinawa International School, OIS) for immersion. DoDEA-Pacific operates a strong curriculum and the Kadena schools have structural depth that the smaller OCONUS DoDEA installations cannot match.

COMMAND CLIMATE

18 WG operational tempo runs the Pacific-theater air-power forward-presence cadence — fighter rotational operations, KC-135 air-refueling support for theater operations, rescue alert posture, and continuous integration with USFJ, PACAF, INDOPACOM, and ROK Air Force/JASDF partners. Taiwan Strait crisis dynamics (the 2022–2024 PRC PLA exercises around Taiwan), the East China Sea/Senkaku Islands continuous pressure, and the North Korea provocations create continuous operational tempo. 353 SOW AFSOC tempo is structurally the highest in the AFSOC enterprise after Hurlburt — Pacific SOF operations, partner-nation training (Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, ROK), and continuous CV-22B/MC-130J/AC-130J commitment to theater requirements. 33 RQS rescue alert and theater-support tempo. The active-duty/civilian/contractor workforce mix is heavily operational — squadron culture is intensely Pacific-theater-aligned and OPTEMPO-driven.

BOTTOM LINE

The structural cornerstone of US air power in the INDOPACOM theater and one of the most operationally consequential overseas installations in the DoD. Career signal for Pacific-aligned aircrew, INDOPACOM joint-staff, and AFSOC Pacific aviation is unmatched. Okinawa quality-of-life is structurally one of the highest among OCONUS assignments — diving, food, culture, and Asian-travel access. The trades are the structurally high OPTEMPO (Pacific contingency demands are continuous), the political sensitivity of off-base behavior given the US-Okinawa relationship, typhoon season risk, the SOFA driving adjustment, and the 18 WG fighter-force-structure transition that defined Kadena identity until 2022.

Who Thrives Here

Not every base is for every service member. Match yourself to the room.

Holloman AFB
  • F-16 / F-22 IFF & FTU INSTRUCTOR PILOTS

49 OG instructor billets in the 8 FS, 314 FS, and 7 FS produce the next generation of fighter pilots. IP credentials at Holloman are a structural career signal — selection signals trust and translates into weapons-officer and command-track pull.

  • MQ-9 PILOTS, SENSOR OPS, MAINTAINERS

6 ATKS and 9 ATKS run the AF's MQ-9 Formal Training Unit. Maintainer accession, pilot/SO B-course instruction, and the AFSC pipeline all flow through here. The Reaper community is large and growing.

  • OUTDOOR DESERT-MOUNTAIN FAMILIES

White Sands National Park (15 min), Cloudcroft and Lincoln National Forest (30 min, hiking/skiing/cool-season escape), Oliver Lee State Park, Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, and the broader Tularosa Basin reward families who get out. The land is the reward.

  • SAVINGS-RATE FAMILIES

BAH math at MHA NM205 (E-5 with deps $1,590, E-7 $1,890) against Alamogordo 3BR rents of $800-$1,100 is one of the better savings-rate AF assignments. Low cost-of-living plus thin local entertainment options means money stays in the account.

Kadena AB
  • PACIFIC-ALIGNED AIRCREW (FIGHTER / SOF / RESCUE)

18 WG rotational fighter operations, 353 SOW AFSOC aviation (MC-130J, AC-130J, CV-22B), 33 RQS rescue (HH-60W), 909 ARS KC-135R — Pacific-theater currency and career capital for aircrew across all these communities is structurally anchored at Kadena. The fighter community in particular finds Kadena uniquely valuable for PACAF aligned credentials given the F-15C/D transition uncertainty.

  • INDOPACOM JOINT STAFF

Kadena’s proximity to INDOPACOM headquarters Hawaii, USFJ HQ Yokota, and the structural epicenter of Taiwan Strait/East China Sea operations creates dense joint-staff and component-level career opportunity. JDA-qualifying joint time at Kadena is increasingly a senior O-grade Pacific-track discriminator.

  • DIVING / OCEAN-LIFESTYLE FAMILIES

Okinawa scuba diving is structurally world-class — coral reefs, manta rays, whale shark encounters at Yomitan, the Kerama Islands (UNESCO biosphere). Sunabe Seawall, Araha Beach, Maeda Point (the Blue Cave), and Zamami/Aka Islands create one of the densest dive-and-snorkel ecosystems anywhere. Families who embrace the ocean find a structural quality-of-life upside unmatched at most OCONUS bases.

  • ASIAN-TRAVEL FAMILIES

Naha Airport (OKA) connects to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, and Singapore directly. Budget airlines (Peach, Jetstar Japan, AirAsia) make multi-week Asia weekend travel structurally affordable. Families who treat the tour as a 3-year Asia trip find unmatched cultural opportunity.
