Sergeant First Class on the 89D side is the rank where the EOD battalion CSM's read of you stops being an abstract input and starts being the direct driver of where you go next. The EOD platoon sergeant position is the doctrinal SFC slot per ATP 4-32.1 and the EOD company TOE — the senior NCO in a 25-35 soldier EOD platoon, working directly for the platoon leader (LT or CPT) and reporting in NCO-channel to the company first sergeant. EOD 1SG diamond tours look different by unit type: line EOD company 1SG in a 28th / 52nd / 71st EOD Group battalion, EOD HHC 1SG at the EOD Group HQ company, or 1SG at an EOD battalion's headquarters company supporting the battalion CSM and CO. The non-1SG MSG path runs through staff-senior-NCO billets — EOD battalion operations sergeant (S-3 NCOIC), EOD group staff senior NCO, 20th CBRNE Command staff senior NCO, JRTC/NTC/JMRC senior EOD O/C/T, NAVSCOLEOD senior cadre, or a joint billet at SOCOM / USASOC / Joint Staff. Both are valid; the slate at the centralized E-8 board reads paper for both.
The Master EOD Badge is on your blouse at this rank or it should be — and if it is not, the SFC-to-MSG centralized board reads the gap. The badge progression under AR 600-8-22 / AR 670-1 is Basic (NAVSCOLEOD graduation), Senior (proficiency board at company-commander signature), and Master (competency-based at SSG+ with significant operational depth). The Master Badge timeline should have closed at SSG or in the first 12 months of SFC; the EOD battalion CSM reads the badge progression as a leading indicator of operational depth.
The post-service math at E-7 with 14-18 years TIS is a real conversation. You handle inside the platoon first; the 1SG hears it as you walk into formation.
- 0530PT formation. Your three section chiefs take accountability of their sections; you take accountability of the platoon and report to the 1SG. The 1SG's read of the EOD company's readiness is your face. The EOD battalion CSM walks the formation occasionally; he reads the battalion by reading the PSGs.
- 0545-0700Unit PT. The platoon runs its plan within the company's plan. EOD techs ruck heavy bomb suits and kit — the platoon does ruck runs on the Tuesday cycle, sandbag carries on Thursday, the strength day on the Wednesday lift cycle, the heat-acclimatization day on the suit-up rotation, the heavy-rotation day for the section that carries the response vehicle line. You walk the formation; you check on the soldier you flagged at last week's sensing session; you adjust the plan if Wednesday's range schedule moved.

- 1130-1300Chow. You eat with the EOD company senior NCOs — the 1SG, the PSGs of the other platoons, the company senior medical NCO, the company senior signal NCO. Conversation is company- and EOD-battalion-level: training, MLC slots, 1SG bench, climate, the upcoming protective-mission rotation, the EOD battalion CSM's read of the regiment.
- 1300-1500Afternoon work. NCOER drafting (four per cycle, you are mentoring your section chiefs through writing theirs and writing your own on your SSGs). Platoon-level coordination with the LT and the EOD company CO. School-packet review for your section chiefs (SLC, NAVSCOLEOD instructor cadre, JIDO-legacy / DTRA, WMD-Coordinator, FBI HDS). Climate-survey results review with the LT. Soldier-in-crisis intervention if needed (the PSG's office is where the soldier-in-crisis is sent first, and on the EOD side the casualty-history weight the community carries means the soldier-in-crisis conversation is a senior-NCO mandatory).
- 1500-1630Final formation. The LT briefs the next day; you brief the platoon-level adjustments; your section chiefs brief their sections. Sensitive items, Class V check if applicable, classified-TM check on the cycle days, end-of-day accountability. The 1SG and you walk the line on critical end items.
- 1630-1730Platoon release. You stay 30-60 minutes for AAR with the LT, sometimes with the 1SG if there was an EOD battalion-level event. The PSG who closes out the day with the LT every evening is the PSG whose LT does not surprise the EOD company CO.
- 1730-2000Personal time. Married SFCs: family. Single SFCs: gym, study, school packet build, board prep. If you are 12-18 months out from MLC, you are running the packet workflow. If you are 18-24 months out from the centralized MSG / 1SG board, you are reviewing past 89D MSG board results and bullet patterns. If you are running the post-service market conversation in the back of your mind, you are also building the clearance-currency / federal-LE-network / FBI HDS / defense-industry / state bomb squad network 24-36 months ahead.
- 2000-2200Counseling cycle, NCOER drafting, evening check-ins with the LT. If a section chief in the platoon called with a problem (financial, marital, legal, soldier-in-crisis, Class V discrepancy, classified-TM custody-chain emergency, protective-mission tasking-inbox issue), you are on the phone or in his office. The PSG's after-hours job is real, and on the EOD side the Class V / classified-TM / protective-mission / casualty-history after-hours load is materially larger than other MOSes.

- Callout dayThe clock collapses. The platoon's sections roll on the LT's tasking; you are floating between sections as the senior NCO on the ground. On the high-stakes callouts (multi-device VBIED suspect package, post-blast investigation supporting FBI lead, protective-mission cordon-and-search, large UXO find at echelon) you are on-scene before the LT — the supported lead agency reads the EOD community by reading the on-scene PSG. The render-safe is clean, the cordon is disciplined, the EOD-to-EOD link-up on a multi-team event is smooth, the final disposition is documented, the post-event report routes through 20th CBRNE channels.
- Field rotationThe clock collapses further. You are running the platoon as the LT's most senior NCO. Sleep in 2-3 hour shifts. The OC/T evaluator at JRTC/NTC/JMRC is writing the platoon's grade on the EOD task set — IEDD lane validation, multi-team coordination, protective-mission integration, post-blast investigation. The MSG / 1SG slate reads the rotation rating.
Weekly Cadence
The Mon-Fri rhythm at EOD PSG level is the platoon-sergeant version of the EOD company 1SG rhythm. Monday is the heaviest planning day — you read the 1SG's Friday release, adjust the platoon's plan to match the company tasking, brief the LT and your three section chiefs by mid-morning. Tuesday-Wednesday are training execution; you observe, your section chiefs run sections. Thursday is maintenance, response-vehicle motor pool (every response vehicle, robotic platform, CREW suite, X-ray gear set, bomb suit lives on Thursday motor pool in the EOD community), or company-level prep; Friday is the company event and release. The protective-mission tasking inbox from the 20th CBRNE Command operations cell is checked daily — any short-notice Secret Service / DoS DSS / FBI joint task force request that lands during the week routes through the EOD company CO and the platoon leader; you are the senior-NCO read on which section can absorb the tasking without breaking the training plan.
The week's second rhythm is the EOD battalion / 20th CBRNE Command level work: QTB cycles (quarterly), NCOER cycles (quarterly), MLC packet review (as needed), and the SFC-bench / 1SG-bench conversations the EOD battalion CSM is running. The PSG who is on the 1SG bench is at the EOD battalion CSM's office at least monthly for a mentoring conversation. The PSG who is not is missing the briefing he needs to compete. The EOD-specific layer is the supported-unit and lead-agency integration cycle — the supported maneuver brigade's calendar of brigade events the EOD platoon supports, the supported maneuver battalion commanders' expectations for EOD integration, and the protective-mission lead agencies' expectations of the platoon.
The week's third rhythm is the platoon climate work — sensing sessions (quarterly per section), SHARP / EO / climate-survey response actions, family-readiness coordination with the EOD company FRG, soldier-crisis interventions when needed. The PSG who treats the climate work as someone else's job is the PSG whose platoon climate survey surprises the brigade. The PSG who runs honest sensing sessions and translates them into LT-and-CO-funded actions is the PSG whose platoon is the EOD battalion CSM's preferred name on the slate. The week's fourth rhythm is the Class V / safety / classified-TM custody / clearance-currency / OEHS cycle at platoon level — every section's demo card status, every range event's 2977 chain, every Class V draw's recount and reconciliation, every classified-TM custody chain check, every soldier's SF-86 / clearance-relevant reporting window, every soldier's OEHS surveillance enrollment. On a 89D platoon, the safety / accountability / classified-TM / clearance / OEHS rhythm is week-in week-out load-bearing work that the senior rater reads as a leading indicator of PSG competence.

Senior rater (the 1SG or EOD company CO) reviews each at the EOD battalion level; the battalion CSM reads them as the EOD regiment's voice into the next slate. The PSG who writes inflated bullets gets called on it; the PSG who writes thin bullets gets the SSGs underrated. Best practice: write the bullet during the rated event ('SSG X led the EOD section through a multi-device VBIED suspect-package response in support of FBI lead on 12 March, achieved a clean render-safe with zero Class V or classified-TM discrepancies, briefed the supported special agent in charge before step-off, validated the diagnostic remote and counter-charge yield calls of two SGTs') and edit at quarterly counseling, not at NCOER drafting. As PSG you run them at the section level, usually quarterly. Format: small group (3-5 soldiers), no LT present, anonymous-feedback boundary established up front. Ask: what is working, what is not, what would you change. Translate the findings into 2-3 actions the LT and EOD company CO can resource; brief the LT, then brief the 1SG. In the 89D world, climate sessions often surface the Class V / classified-TM accountability burden, the disposal-range fatigue, the family-separation cost of protective-mission rotation cycles, the deployment-cycle wear, the school-slot fairness perception, and the post-blast / casualty-history weight the senior bench carries. The PSG who runs honest sensing sessions and translates them into LT-and-CO-funded actions is the PSG the EOD battalion CSM names in the slate.

You step in. Accountability formation, sick-call walk, after-hours phone calls from soldiers in crisis, the casualty-notification call if the worst happens (and on the EOD side, casualty notification carries a load the rest of the formation does not always see — the EOD community has paid this price more than most over the last two decades, and the senior bench remembers). The PSG who can step in for the 1SG without the EOD company CO noticing is the PSG who is on the 1SG slate the next time the battalion looks. The 89D-specific load on the acting-1SG seat is the protective-mission tasking inbox — Secret Service advance requests, DoS DSS protective detail requests, FBI joint counter-terrorism task force requests — that route through the platoon level and demand a senior-NCO read before tasking flows to the response teams.
