SANDF First Year After Service: The Practical Guide

Your separation brief covers the administrative steps. What it typically does not walk you through are the specific deadlines that determine whether you receive the financial and medical support you are entitled to. The GEPF notification window is 6 months. The UIF claim window is 32 days. Miss either and you are fighting bureaucracy rather than building your next chapter.

Section 01

GEPF: The 6-Month Window You Cannot Miss

The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) administers retirement, resignation, and severance benefits for SANDF members who are members of the Government Employees Pension Law (GEPL). GEPF is Africa's largest pension fund — publicly administered and governed by the Government Employees Pension Law, 1996. Benefit claims must be initiated promptly after separation.

Critical deadline

GEPF requires that a member or their employer submits the pension exit claim documentation within 6 months of the date of exit from service. This is a publicly documented GEPF requirement. Delays can result in delayed payment processing and additional administrative steps to validate your claim. Your HR office at your unit is responsible for initiating the employer-side forms — but do not assume it has been done. Follow up in writing.

Documents required for GEPF claim

  • Z102 exit form (completed by employer/HR)
  • Certified copy of identity document
  • Certified copy of birth certificate
  • Banking details (bank-stamped confirmation)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Divorce order / settlement (if applicable)
  • Death certificate of dependants (if applicable)

GEPF benefit types at separation

  • Resignation benefit (less than 10 years of service)
  • Severance package (if retrenched)
  • Retirement gratuity (at age 60 or early retirement)
  • Ill-health retirement benefit (medical discharge)
  • Spouse's pension on member death
  • Children's pension on member death
  • Funeral benefit (publicly listed GEPF benefit)
GEPF contact and verificationGEPF member enquiries: 0800 117 669 (toll-free) or gepf.co.za. Your GEPF member number is on your payslips. Confirm your beneficiary nominations are current before separation — beneficiary forms must be updated through your employer HR office while you are still a member.
Section 02

UIF: 32 Days from Separation to File

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides short-term income support to workers who become unemployed. SANDF members who contributed to UIF during their service are entitled to claim benefits after separation. The UIF is administered by the Department of Employment and Labour under the Unemployment Insurance Act, 2001.

The 32-day rule

UIF unemployment benefits must be applied for within 32 days of the date of separation. If you miss this window, you lose the right to claim for that period. This is a hard administrative deadline under the Unemployment Insurance Act. Applying in person at a Department of Employment and Labour office is the primary channel; the uFiling online system (ufiling.labour.gov.za) also supports claims.

UIF benefit amount

Benefits are calculated as a percentage of your previous remuneration using a sliding scale — lower earners receive a higher percentage. The maximum benefit period for unemployment claims is 238 days (approximately 8 months) for members who contributed the maximum period. Actual entitlement depends on your contribution history.

Documents needed to claim UIF

Identity document (green barcoded ID or Smart ID card), UI-19 form (completed by your employer — the DOD HR office must complete this before separation), last 6 months of payslips, banking details, and proof of registration as a work-seeker at a Labour Centre. The UI-19 is critical — do not leave your unit without it.

SANDF and UIF contributions

Not all categories of SANDF service automatically attract UIF contributions. Full-time members on permanent establishment typically contribute. Short-service contract members and some auxiliary categories may have different arrangements. Check your payslips for the UIF deduction line item to confirm your contribution history before separation.

UIF enquiries: 0800 030 007 (toll-free) or visit your nearest Labour Centre. The uFiling portal is ufiling.labour.gov.za. UIF is administered separately from GEPF — you must claim both independently.

Section 03

GEPF Death and Disability Provisions

GEPF provides specific benefits for ill-health retirement and death while in service. These are separate from the standard pension benefit and have their own processes. Understanding them before separation — especially for members exiting on medical grounds — is essential.

GEPF Death and Disability Benefit Structure

Ill-Health Retirement (Medical Discharge)

If the SANDF medically discharges you and your condition is assessed as preventing future employment, GEPF may approve an enhanced ill-health benefit rather than a standard resignation benefit. This typically results in a higher benefit amount. A GEPF medical assessment process applies. Your DOD Medical Board finding feeds into the GEPF determination.

Spouse's Pension

On the death of a member, the spouse (or registered life partner) is entitled to a monthly pension from GEPF. The amount is a proportion of the member's pension benefit. The spouse must apply through GEPF with the death certificate and marriage/partnership proof. This benefit does not start automatically — it must be claimed.

Children's Pension

Dependent children of a deceased member are entitled to a monthly benefit, subject to age limits and dependency conditions. Children's pension is payable to children up to age 18 (or beyond if still studying, per GEPF rules). Again, this requires a claim — it is not automatic.

Funeral Benefit

GEPF pays a funeral benefit on the death of a member or qualifying beneficiary. The current benefit structure and amount is published by GEPF at gepf.co.za. Claims require the death certificate submitted to GEPF within a specified period.

GEPF benefit details: gepf.co.za. GEPF call centre: 0800 117 669 (toll-free). Confirm current benefit structures directly with GEPF as rules are subject to Board revision.
Section 04

SAMHS Medical Continuity After Discharge

The South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) provides medical care to SANDF members while in service. On separation, access to SAMHS facilities ends — with specific exceptions for medical discharge cases. Understanding this transition prevents gaps in treatment continuity.

Medical discharge — limited SAMHS continuity

Members discharged on medical grounds may retain limited access to SAMHS facilities for ongoing treatment directly related to the condition that caused the medical discharge, for a period following separation. The specific terms are determined by the SANDF medical board process and the individual's discharge authority. Confirm your specific entitlement in writing from SAMHS before leaving.

SAMHS records — obtain before separation

Your complete medical file held by SAMHS is your clinical history for the duration of service. Request a copy before separation through your unit SAMHS facility or military sick bay. These records are essential for any future injury or disability claim, and for continuity of care with civilian healthcare providers.

SASSA — if you meet disability criteria

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administers the Disability Grant for South Africans who are unable to work due to disability. If your service-related injury or illness renders you unable to support yourself financially, a SASSA Disability Grant application may be applicable alongside (not instead of) GEPF ill-health benefits. SASSA enquiries: 0800 60 10 11 or sassa.gov.za.

Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS)

GEMS is the medical scheme for government employees, including SANDF members. On separation, continued membership may be available as a continuance member, though at a different premium rate and without the employer contribution subsidy. Contact GEMS (gems.gov.za) before your last day to assess options — a gap in medical cover can be costly.

Section 05

Mental Health Support and Veterans' Organisations

Operational service in peacekeeping deployments (MONUSCO, AMISOM, historical border operations) carries psychological costs that military culture does not always make easy to acknowledge. The organisations below are publicly established and accessible to SANDF veterans.

Combat Stress South Africa

Combat Stress SA is a publicly operating non-governmental organisation providing psychological support to South African veterans and serving members. It operates counselling and support services for combat-related PTSD and operational stress. Contact details and services are published at their public channels. They have provided support to veterans of border war service and current peacekeeping deployments.

SANDF Veterans' League

The SANDF Veterans' League is the official veterans' organisation associated with the South African National Defence Force. It provides a network for former members and advocates on veterans' welfare matters. Membership and contact information is available through the DOD public channels and veteran community networks.

South African Legion of Military Veterans

The South African Legion is one of the oldest established veterans' organisations in South Africa, with branches nationally. It provides welfare support, advocacy, and community for veterans. The Legion maintains a public presence and chapter network. Contact via salegion.org.

DOD Social Work Services

SANDF maintains social work capacity within the SAMHS and unit structures. For members still within the separation process, social work referrals are available through the chain of command. For recent veterans, former SANDF social work contacts may be available for short-term post-separation support in cases of genuine hardship.

Section 06

Key Deadlines and Contacts

The first year after separation is administrative. Miss the deadlines and you spend years trying to recover what you were owed from day one.

01

GEPF exit claim — 6 months from separation date

Ensure your unit HR has submitted the Z102 form and that you have submitted your certified documentation. Follow up in writing. Do not assume it was done.

02

UIF claim — 32 days from separation date

Register at your nearest Labour Centre or file via ufiling.labour.gov.za. Bring your UI-19 (from DOD HR), your ID, payslips, and banking details. 0800 030 007.

03

GEMS continuance membership — before last day

Contact GEMS (gems.gov.za) to convert to continuance membership before separation. A break in cover creates administrative complexity and potential uninsured periods.

04

SAMHS medical records — on or before last day

Request your complete medical file in writing from your unit SAMHS facility. You are entitled to this record. It is the foundation of any future service-related health claim.

05

Update GEPF beneficiary nomination — before separation

Beneficiary nominations can only be updated while you are an active member through your employer HR. After separation you cannot change them. Ensure they reflect your current wishes.
