Camp Lejeune vs Joint Base Andrews

Marines, NC vs Air Force, MD

The Intel

Camp Lejeune: "America's Swamp of Freedom." Joint Base Andrews: "Where Air Force One Lives and E-4s Can't Afford To." Different uniforms, different installations, same dawning truth: wherever you are, someone from the other branch is convinced they have it harder.

Honest version: Camp Lejeune — II MEF, Low cost of living, but Jacksonville is a military town through and through. Joint Base Andrews — Air Force One, Washington DC access, but DC area cost of living. You'll spend more of your actual life in Jacksonville, NC or Camp Springs, MD than on any range. That's worth weighing. Camp Lejeune: affordable enough to build wealth. Joint Base Andrews: expensive enough that your savings account is a rumor your spouse heard about. Climate duel: Hot & humid summers, mild winters, hurricane risk at Camp Lejeune versus Hot humid summers, cold winters at Joint Base Andrews. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season.

One base you'll miss for what it gave you. The other you'll miss for what it cost you. Both leave marks the DD-214 doesn't mention.

Housing
Camp LejeuneOn-base housing (Lincoln Military Housing) with numerous neighborhoods — Tarawa Terrace, Midway Park, Berkeley Manor. Quality varies by area and age of unit. Off-base in Jacksonville is very affordable — $900-$1,400 for a 3BR. Sneads Ferry and Swansboro are nicer beach-town options.
Joint Base AndrewsOn-base housing (Corvias managed) is limited and waitlisted — 6-12 months for family housing. Off-base in Bowie, Upper Marlboro, and Clinton ranges $1,800-$2,600 for a 3BR. Southern Prince George's County is more affordable than northern PG. BAH is among the highest in the DoD but barely keeps pace with DC metro prices.
Spouse Employment
Camp LejeuneLimited professional jobs in Jacksonville. Healthcare, retail, and food service dominate. Many spouses work on-base at MCX, MWR, or as contractors. Remote work increasingly common. Wilmington (1 hr) and Raleigh (2.5 hrs) have better markets.
Joint Base AndrewsThe DC metro area is arguably the best spouse employment market in the entire military. Federal government, defense contractors (Lockheed, Northrop, Booz Allen), nonprofits, healthcare, and tech all within easy reach. Clearance-holder spouses are in especially high demand. Remote work culture is strong.
Medical
Camp LejeuneNaval Medical Center Camp Lejeune — full hospital with ER, OB, dental, and behavioral health. Can be heavily utilized. Onslow Memorial Hospital off-base as overflow. Wilmington and Greenville have larger specialty centers.
Joint Base AndrewsMalcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center (on base) — outpatient focus with some surgical capability. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (Bethesda, 25 min) handles major inpatient care and is one of the best military hospitals in the world.
Gate Commute
Camp LejeuneMain gate on NC-24 backs up during morning and afternoon rush. Piney Green gate is a popular alternative. Base is large — cross-base commutes from Tarawa Terrace to mainside can be 15-20 min. Marine Blvd through Jacksonville is always congested.
Joint Base AndrewsMain gate off Allentown Road can back up during morning rush. The real problem is the Capital Beltway (I-495) and Suitland Parkway — DC-area traffic is notorious. Living south of base avoids Beltway commutes but limits access to DC amenities. MARC train from Bowie is an option for DC commuters.

Tax & Domicile
State income tax
Camp LejeuneNorth Carolina: flat 4.25% for tax year 2025; scheduled to drop to 3.99% for tax years after 2025 per NCDOR rate schedules.
Joint Base AndrewsMaryland: graduated 2.0%–5.75% state individual income tax (top bracket on incomes above $250K single/$300K joint per MD Comptroller). MD counties levy a piggyback county income tax — Prince George's County 3.20%, Anne Arundel County 2.70%, Charles County 3.03%, Calvert County 3.0% (effective combined rates 5.7%–8.95%). Active-duty military pay is taxed by MD for MD-domiciled SMs; MD exempts first $5,000 of military pay (Tax-General §10-207(q)).
Sales tax
Camp Lejeune4.75% state + 2.25% Onslow County local = 7.00% combined on most retail purchases.
Joint Base AndrewsMD state 6.0% (no local sales tax). Groceries exempt. Vehicle excise tax 6.0% on title transfer.
Vehicle reg
Camp LejeuneAnnual passenger registration $46.25 (effective post-July 2024 CPI adjustment). NC uses "Tag & Tax Together" — county property tax on the vehicle is collected at registration renewal. No annual safety inspection statewide; emissions inspection required in certain counties (Onslow is currently exempt).
Joint Base AndrewsMD MVA biennial registration — passenger vehicle ~$135 every 2 years for vehicles <3,700 lbs, ~$187 for 3,700+ lbs. Biennial safety inspection only on title transfer (MD does not require periodic safety inspection). VEIP (Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program) biennial emissions inspection required in 16 jurisdictions including Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County.
Camp Lejeune · Domicile Play
SCRA preserves state of legal residence; MSRRA extends to spouses. Jacksonville/Lejeune is a common SLR-to-no-income-tax-state crossover point — TX/FL/TN domicile is a popular play for SMs who entered NC as residents.
Joint Base Andrews · Domicile Play
SCRA preserves SLR; MSRRA extends to spouses. MD combined state + Prince George's County rates run 5.2%–8.95% — meaningfully punitive against AF SAM-FOX aircrew, AFDW staff, and DC-metro joint-duty pay. No-tax-state SLR (TX/FL/TN/WA) is the obvious play for any aircrew with significant taxable income; the SAM-FOX community heavily uses VA SLR (lower than MD) or no-tax-state SLR.

Camp Lejeune

The contamination history isn't a Reddit rumor — it's federal law. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 is the operative document, and ATSDR's public-health assessment covering 1953–1987 is the underlying record. If you, a spouse, or a dependent lived or worked aboard Lejeune for at least 30 days during that window, the VA's eight presumptive conditions (kidney cancer, liver cancer, NHL, leukemia, multiple myeloma, Parkinson's, bladder cancer, aplastic anemia/MDS) carry a presumption of service connection. For anyone PCSing in now: the historic plumes were sealed off and remediation is decades along, but talk to the housing office and ask which neighborhoods are on which water-service connection. Knowing that fact costs you nothing. What you're actually signing up for is the largest single-base Marine Corps experience on the East Coast. II MEF is a deployment workhorse. The OPTEMPO rotates between MEU pumps, UDP to Okinawa, and large-scale exercises like Nordic Response. If you're a junior infantryman or supporting MOS, your odds of a real-world float in your first contract are high. The trade-off is geographic: Jacksonville is a small city that exists primarily to support the base, the off-base economy is thin for working spouses outside healthcare/retail, and Wilmington's gravitational pull is real but it's a 60-minute commute. The beaches save it. Topsail, Emerald Isle, and the Crystal Coast are 25–45 minutes out and are objectively beautiful. The hurricane risk is real and stacks on top of the water history — keep your insurance current.

Joint Base Andrews

Joint Base Andrews is the structural air gateway to the National Capital Region — the home of presidential and vice-presidential airlift, the air-mobility node for distinguished-visitor (DV) and cabinet-level travel, and the host installation for AF District of Washington (AFDW). The 89th Airlift Wing is the wing every American has watched on television — the operator of VC-25A/B 'Air Force One' (the VC-25A pair of modified 747-200Bs entering retirement as the VC-25B pair of modified 747-8s transitions in), the C-32A 'Air Force Two' (modified 757-200, primary vice-presidential and First Lady airlift), the C-37A/B (Gulfstream V/G550, cabinet-level DV airlift), the C-40B (737-700, four-star and senior-DV airlift), and the UH-1N (Huey) for NCR helicopter support. Special Air Mission (SAM-FOX, the 89 AW callsign convention) tempo is structurally driven by the presidential and senior-DV travel calendar — when the White House moves, the 89 AW moves. The 316th Wing is the host wing — base operations, security forces (the 316 SFG provides NCR support including continuity-of-government coordination), force support, and medical. AF District of Washington (AFDW) is here — the AF service-component to the joint National Capital Region force, providing administrative and ceremonial support across the AF NCR enterprise (the AF Honor Guard, the AF Band, the 11th Wing at JBAB). Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region (JFHQ-NCR) has a tenant presence. The 459th Air Refueling Wing (AFRC) operates KC-135R for the Air Reserve mission. Naval Air Facility Washington (NAF-W) on the base is the Navy rotary-wing presence supporting NCR Navy operations. The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling complex is across town but the broader DC IC enterprise routes through Andrews for SAM-FOX support. Career signal: SAM-FOX aircrew (VC-25, C-32, C-37, C-40) is one of the most career-defining flying assignments in the AF — the screening is structurally rigorous, the operational tempo is presidential-calendar-driven, and the post-tour career capital opens AF DV-airlift, AMC leadership, and political-military-aviation tracks. AFDW staff time is the institutional credential for AF NCR-track senior officers. The honest local picture: BAH for MHA DC053 (the Washington DC metro area) — E-5 with deps is $3,132 against Bowie/Upper Marlboro/Clinton/Waldorf 3BR rents that run $1,900-$2,600 (manageable in southern Prince George's County, tighter the closer you push toward DC). Maryland state income tax is graduated 2-5.75% (top bracket on incomes above $250K) plus county piggyback (Prince George's County 3.20%) — meaningfully punitive against AF DV-aircrew pay. Prince George's County Public Schools rate uneven; many career families chase Anne Arundel County (Crofton, Gambrills, Odenton), Calvert County, Charles County, or pay private. National Harbor restaurants, Old Town Alexandria charm, Smithsonian museums (free), Capital One Arena (Caps/Wizards), Nationals Park, FedEx Field (Commanders) make the DMV one of the highest-amenity off-duty environments in the AF. The DC traffic reality is structural — the Capital Beltway (I-495), Suitland Parkway, Indian Head Highway, and Branch Avenue all back up at predictable hours and the post commute math matters.

Real Talk

What you’ll actually deal with. The structured table above is the brief — this is the back-channel.

Camp Lejeune
HOUSING

Liberty Military Housing (formerly Lincoln) runs the neighborhoods — Tarawa Terrace, Midway Park, Berkeley Manor, Heroes Manor, others. Quality varies materially by neighborhood and unit age; the older areas have a longer trail of maintenance complaints. Off-base, Sneads Ferry is the school-district upgrade play, and Hubert/Swansboro buy you a quieter, more beach-adjacent life. Ask the housing office which neighborhoods are on which water system — five-minute conversation, peace of mind for the rest of your tour.

SCHOOLS

Onslow County Schools rate below state average. Dixon and Swansboro feeders (in Sneads Ferry/Hubert) are the better-rated sub-districts within the county. DoDEA K–8 on base is small and tight-knit and often a better fit than the surrounding civilian district for younger kids; the high-school transition takes you back into Onslow County.

COMMAND CLIMATE

II MEF is operational. The deployment treadmill is real and your battalion's place in the rotation matters more than the base itself. MARSOC selection out of Lejeune is a known career play for SOI-East graduates with the bandwidth to train for it.

BOTTOM LINE

If you came to deploy with a Marine infantry battalion, this is where you do it. The water-history paperwork is now legally clear. The cost of living lets one-income families breathe. The trade-off is a thin off-base economy and a school district that rewards informed sub-district shopping.

Joint Base Andrews
HOUSING

Corvias manages on-base — 6-12 month waitlists are common on family quarters, especially for the senior-NCO and field-grade brackets. Off-base: Bowie (15 min north, Prince George's County / partial Anne Arundel boundary, mixed PG schools but Bowie itself is solid suburban) is the consensus default for AF families; Upper Marlboro (10 min east, Prince George's County) is the convenience move; Clinton and Waldorf (15-25 min south, PG County and Charles County — Waldorf in Charles County offers school upgrade) work for families wanting affordability and Charles County schools; Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton (Anne Arundel County, 25-35 min north of base — top-rated Anne Arundel schools) is the school-upgrade move and the consensus best for families who prioritize PG-to-AA school escape; Alexandria and the Virginia close-in suburbs are theoretically possible but the I-495 Beltway commute eats two hours daily.

SCHOOLS

Prince George's County Public Schools rate uneven across the catchment — some magnet and charter options are strong (Eleanor Roosevelt HS for STEM, Suitland HS for performing arts, Charles Herbert Flowers HS for STEM) but the standard catchment ratings are mid-to-low. Anne Arundel County Public Schools (Crofton HS, Arundel HS, Severn Run, Old Mill) rate consistently well — the consensus move for AF families willing to commute. Calvert County and Charles County rate better than PG. Many career-officer families choose private schools (DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Bishop McNamara in Forestville, Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, the constellation of Bethesda/Potomac private schools) — DC-metro private school tuition runs structurally high. No DoDEA.

COMMAND CLIMATE

89 AW SAM-FOX tempo is structurally driven by the presidential and senior-DV travel calendar — when POTUS moves, the wing moves, and when the calendar is heavy (international summits, OCO travel, campaign cycles) the alert-and-execute cadence runs hard. 316 WG host-wing operations run base-ops cadence. AFDW runs NCR ceremonial and administrative tempo — the AF Honor Guard performs at Arlington National Cemetery continuously, the AF Band performs at White House and federal events, and AFDW funeral honors coordination is daily. 459 ARW AFRC runs reserve KC-135 tempo. NAF-W runs continuous NCR Navy rotary-wing operations including Marine One alternates and senior-DV helo support. The active-duty/civilian/contractor workforce mix at Andrews is heavy — squadron culture leans institutional and politically-aware.

BOTTOM LINE

The structural air gateway to the NCR and home of the most visible airlift mission in the AF. Career signal for SAM-FOX DV aircrew, AFDW NCR-track officers, and joint-duty-track field-grade officers is unmatched. DC metro lifestyle is one of the highest-amenity off-duty environments in the AF. The trades are the DC cost of living (BAH covers but barely), the PG schools issue (drives most families toward Anne Arundel or private), and the DC traffic structural reality.

Who Thrives Here

Not every base is for every service member. Match yourself to the room.

Camp Lejeune
  • INFANTRY AND COMBAT-ARMS MARINES

II MEF deploys constantly — MEU cycles, UDP, large-scale exercises. This is where you go to actually do the job your MOS describes, not just train for it.

  • BUDGET-FOCUSED FAMILIES

Off-base rent in Jacksonville/Sneads Ferry runs $900–$1,400 for a 3BR — among the lowest of any major Marine installation. BAH-to-rent ratio is one of the friendliest in the Corps.

  • BEACH-LIFE PEOPLE

Onslow Beach is on-base. Topsail, Emerald Isle, and the Outer Banks are within an easy drive. Surf and saltwater are genuinely part of the lifestyle here.

Joint Base Andrews
  • SAM-FOX DV AIRLIFT AIRCREW

89 AW VC-25, C-32, C-37, C-40 aircrew — pilots, flight engineers, flight attendants, loadmasters — operate the most visible airlift mission in the AF. Screening is structurally rigorous and the career capital after a SAM-FOX tour is unmatched for AF DV-airlift and AMC leadership tracks.

  • AFDW / NCR STAFF OFFICERS

AFDW is the AF service-component to the NCR enterprise. Senior officer staff billets at AFDW and the connected 11 WG / JFHQ-NCR positions are structurally career-defining for AF officers on the NCR-track and political-military arcs.

  • JOINT-DUTY-TRACK OFFICERS

DC adjacency creates the most concentrated joint-duty opportunity in the AF. AFDW, JFHQ-NCR, OSD-portal joint billets, DIA tenant work, and the Pentagon at 20-30 min make Andrews the AF joint-duty career anchor. JDA-qualifying joint time is structurally available.

  • DC-METRO LIFESTYLE FAMILIES

The DMV is one of the highest-amenity off-duty environments in the AF — Smithsonian (free), Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, FedEx Field, Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor, and the federal-government dual-income economy. Spouse employment in DC for clearance-holders is structurally excellent.
