If you asked the same question to a 150U: the 150U pipeline is demanding and the platform knowledge is real — Shadow and Gray Eagle systems are legitimately complex. Neither would believe the other one. Both would be correct. Two MOS codes that coexist in the same military the way a submarine and a golf cart both qualify as "vehicles."

The Weather Officer is the person the colonel calls when a mission is weather-dependent and wants someone with a degree to confirm what the forecast says. The scientific foundation is real — atmospheric physics, numerical weather modeling, mesoscale analysis — and the AMS certification is legitimate. The operational consequence is also real: a wrong forecast grounds missions or sends aircraft into conditions that kill crews. The career tension for weather officers is that meteorology is a science and the Air Force is an institution, and these two systems have different tolerances for uncertainty. Learning to brief probabilistic information to commanders who want binary yes/no answers is a career-long communication challenge. The NWS, NOAA, and civilian meteorology sector recognize military weather officer credentials. Private sector forecasting for aviation, energy, and agriculture pays well and the lifestyle is considerably calmer. The academic path — advanced degrees in atmospheric science — is well-supported by military education benefits and leads to research careers at universities and national laboratories.

You will fly aircraft that cost more than most houses without leaving a climate-controlled ground control station, which sounds cushy until you realize you're running 12-hour ISR orbits staring at a screen trying to determine if that vehicle has been parked suspiciously long. The 150U pipeline is demanding and the platform knowledge is real — Shadow and Gray Eagle systems are legitimately complex. What nobody tells you is that the demand for UAS in every theater means your deployment-to-dwell ratio will be punishing. You'll also spend significant time babysitting maintenance issues on platforms whose logistics tail is not fully mature. The civilian UAS market is real but noisier than the 17C-to-private-sector pipeline — sort the hype from the actual jobs carefully. Within the Army, UAS warrant officers are increasingly valued as the doctrine catches up to the reality that drones have changed warfare.
