Got a wild idea? We build for service members — not the brass, not shareholders. If it's good, it ships.
Suggest a Feature →Ramstein Air Base — Kaiserslautern, Germany
The largest US air base outside America. USAFE headquarters in the Palatinate wine country.
Ramstein Air Base is the headquarters of US Air Forces in Europe — Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) and is one of the most critical US military installations in the world. It's the primary airlift hub for all of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East — everything moving by air through the European theater moves through Ramstein. The base is enormous by any standard.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) is the largest American community outside the United States, with tens of thousands of service members and dependents spread across Ramstein, Landstuhl (home of LRMC, the major Army medical center), and surrounding installations. The community is self-sufficient in a way that can actually be a liability — it's easy to spend an entire tour inside the American bubble.
The surrounding Palatinate (Pfalz) region is one of Germany's most underrated areas. The Pfälzerwald is Germany's largest contiguous forest reserve. The Deutsche Weinstraße (German Wine Road) runs directly through the region. The Rhine Valley, Alsace in France, and Luxembourg are all within 90 minutes. Engage with the region — it's extraordinary.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Doner Kebab (KL and surrounding towns)
"Kaiserslautern has excellent Turkish food. This is not a coincidence."
Germany has the world's largest Turkish immigrant community outside Turkey. Kaiserslautern has excellent Turkish restaurants and kebab shops that far exceed what the American military community typically discovers.
Seek out a proper sit-down Turkish restaurant for lahmacun, pide, and mezze — not just döner. The quality gap between good Turkish food and the kebab shop is significant.
Palatinate Wine Estates (Deidesheim, Neustadt)
"The Pfalz produces more wine than any other German region."
The German Wine Road runs through the Palatinate — Deidesheim and Neustadt are the best towns for wine estate restaurants. Pfälzer Saumagen (stuffed pig stomach — better than it sounds) and Riesling.
Pfälzer Saumagen was Helmut Kohl's favorite dish. Order it with Grumbeere (Pfalz dialect for potatoes) and a glass of Riesling Spätlese.
Badenia (German-French Alsatian Cuisine)
"Cross the Rhine for France. Strasbourg is 90 minutes. Worth it."
Alsace in France is just across the Rhine — a region with German history and French cooking standards. Tarte flambée (Flammkuchen), choucroute, and excellent wine. Strasbourg's restaurant scene is world-class.
The Strasbourg Christmas market (Marché de Noël) is one of Europe's oldest and best. Plan a December day trip.
Gasthaus Zur Krone (Palatinate villages)
"Village gasthaus culture in the Pfälzerwald."
Drive into any Pfälzerwald village and find the local Gasthaus. Regional specialties vary by village — Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake with new wine), roast game.
Federweißer (partially fermented new wine) in September-October is drunk with Zwiebelkuchen in every Pfalz wine village. It's the autumn tradition.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
German Wine Road (Deutsche Weinstraße)
"85km from almond blossoms to the French border. Europe's first wine road."
The Deutsche Weinstraße runs from Schweigen on the French border to Bockenheim — through continuous Riesling and Dornfelder vineyards, wine villages, and castle ruins. Excellent cycling route with countless stops.
The Southern Wine Road section (Annweiler to the border) is the most dramatic with castle ruins and the most authentic wine culture.
Trifels Castle (Annweiler)
"Richard the Lionheart's imprisonment castle. Pfälzerwald setting."
Burg Trifels in the Pfälzerwald was the prison for Richard I of England (the Lionheart) and later held the Imperial Crown Jewels. The approach through forest on a rocky sandstone ridge is dramatic.
Walk up from Annweiler rather than driving. The forest trail approach takes 45 minutes and the castle appears dramatically above the treeline.
Mosel and Rhine Cycling (Day Sections)
"Two of Europe's greatest cycling rivers within 90 minutes."
The Mosel River cycling path (from Koblenz) and Rhine cycling path are both accessible from Ramstein for day and weekend trips. Castle-studded valleys with bike-friendly ferries across the rivers.
Take the train to Koblenz, cycle down the Mosel to Cochem or Bernkastel, then train back. One of the best day trips from Ramstein.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
Strasbourg, France (Alsace)
"The capital of Alsace and the European Parliament. 90 minutes west."
Strasbourg has the most beautiful old town in France — the Grande Île is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with half-timbered houses, the massive Gothic cathedral, and the Petite France canal quarter.
Visit in December for the Marché de Noël — the oldest and most authentic Christmas market in France. The cathedral's astronomical clock chimes at noon.
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Area
"The hospital that received every American wounded in war since 2001."
LRMC is a solemn and important part of the Ramstein community. The hospital has received every service member medically evacuated from Iraq and Afghanistan. Understanding its role deepens appreciation for the assignment.
Fisher House at LRMC provides lodging for families of wounded service members. Volunteer opportunities exist for garrison community members.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Technik Museum Speyer
"Space shuttle Buran, Boeing 747, and a submarine. Outside."
The Technik Museum in Speyer has the Soviet space shuttle Buran, a Boeing 747 on a pedestal, a full submarine (walk through it), and dozens of historic aircraft and vehicles. One of Germany's best family museums.
Buy the combination ticket with the Sinsheim auto museum 30 minutes away — includes a Concorde and a Tu-144 supersonic jet.
Legoland Germany (Günzburg)
"European Legoland. 2.5 hours from Ramstein on a good traffic day."
The German Legoland is one of Europe's best family theme parks — massive Lego installations, rides, and the signature Miniland with European landmarks. ITT discount available.
Buy ITT tickets before going. Book accommodation in Günzburg for a two-day visit — the park warrants it with young children.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The most dramatically sited capital in Europe. American military cemetery."
Luxembourg City sits on a massive sandstone gorge — the Bock fortifications and the Old Town above the Alzette Valley are extraordinary. The American Military Cemetery has Patton's grave and the graves of thousands of WWII soldiers.
"Rome north of the Alps. The best Roman ruins in Germany."
Trier was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century. The Porta Nigra (the best-preserved Roman gate in the world), the imperial baths, amphitheater, and Karl Marx's birthplace are all walkable.
"The romantic castle. The oldest German university."
Heidelberg is 60 minutes east — the castle ruin above the Neckar is Germany's most visited monument, and the old town below is beautiful. The Philosophers' Walk on the opposite bank offers the best castle views.
The KMC is large enough that you can spend your entire tour inside the American bubble — and many people do. Deliberately plan off-base experiences or they won't happen.
Kaiserslautern (K-Town) has a reputation for not being charming. That's partially fair but the city has good neighborhoods and the Palatinate surrounding it is excellent.
Ramstein's operations support classified and sensitive missions. Exercise appropriate OPSEC on social media about aircraft movements, flight schedules, and operational activity.
The weekly flea markets in Kaiserslautern and surrounding towns are excellent for household goods, antiques, and cheap prices on things you'd pay full price for in American stores.
Learn enough German for basic courtesy interactions. Even "Guten Morgen," "Bitte," and "Danke" make a significant difference in how local German residents respond to the military community.
The KMC's size and self-sufficiency is both its greatest convenience and its greatest trap. It's entirely possible to spend three years in Germany and barely experience Germany. The people who look back on Ramstein fondly are almost always the ones who got out of the bubble regularly — day trips, language classes, local friendships, and genuine engagement with the Palatinate. Make that choice deliberately.
