Recruiter vs. Reality
What they tell you

You'll be the armorer that infantry units depend on to keep their crew-served weapons operational — M240s, M2s, M224s, M252s, and the full range of Marine infantry weapons systems. Weapons technicians develop the kind of detailed mechanical knowledge of infantry weapons that armorers in police departments and civilian shooting ranges specifically seek. The gunsmithing skills are real and portable.

What it's actually like

Infantry weapons are maintained by their operators until they exceed organizational repair capability, at which point they come to you. You will perform weapons maintenance that requires both technical knowledge and physical dexterity with small components that are easy to lose and expensive to replace. The accountability for weapons serial numbers is absolute — a lost weapon is a serious event regardless of the reason. Civilian armorer certifications and gunsmithing credentials are accessible with your background. Law enforcement armory contracts, federal firearms licensed dealers, and defense contractor small arms support programs all hire from the weapons technician background. The specific knowledge of military crew-served weapons systems is genuinely rare and valued in niche markets.
