We invite you to share kava with us.This is a significant social and cultural invitation. Kava (yaqona) ceremony marks trust and inclusion. Accepting is the only correct answer. Declining is a serious social failure.
Our soldiers are warriors.Literal and accurate in Fijian cultural context. iTaukei warrior tradition is real — not ceremonial — and it shapes how they approach discipline, unit cohesion, and operational commitment.

Field Notes

  • Kava ceremony (yaqona) is a genuine social institution — when invited, participate respectfully. Clap once before receiving the bowl, drink in one go, clap three times after. The ceremony establishes trust.
  • RFMF soldiers have served in virtually every UN mission area in the world for decades. Their institutional knowledge of UN mission management is real and worth tapping.
  • Physical standards in Fijian forces are consistently high — this is a source of unit pride and identity. Do not underestimate their physical capability.
  • iTaukei warrior culture is the cultural root — clan and chief hierarchies still shape social structure. Respect for chiefs and elders translates into the military rank structure.
  • Christian faith is prominent and genuine. Sunday observance, prayer before operations, and religious references in professional conversation are normal.
  • Warmth and hospitality are cultural constants — if they welcome you, they mean it completely. Match their warmth or you will seem cold.

Cultural Landmines

  • Treating Fiji as a Pacific island curiosity rather than a professional military force with a serious operational record.
  • Missing the depth of their UN mission experience — do not explain peacekeeping to Fijian officers.
  • Declining kava ceremony participation — this is a serious cultural failure, not a minor awkwardness.
  • Confusing Fijian culture with other Pacific island cultures — iTaukei culture is specific and distinct.
  • Underestimating physical capability — Fijian soldiers are consistently among the fittest in any coalition.

Survival Kit

  • 1.Learn the kava ceremony before you arrive: receive the bowl with two claps, drink it all in one go, return it with three claps, say "Bula!" The ceremony is entry into the relationship.
  • 2.Ask about specific deployments — UNIFIL, MFO Sinai, RAMSI Solomon Islands. Their deployment history is extraordinary and asking shows you know who you are working with.
  • 3.Physical fitness and warrior culture are sources of genuine pride. Acknowledge the physical standards. Compete if given the opportunity — they will respect the effort.
  • 4.Christian faith is integrated into professional culture — morning prayers, religious references, Sunday observance. Accommodate it without comment.
  • 5.Vinaka (thank you) and Bula (hello/cheers) are the two words that will earn warmth immediately. Use them.
  • The regimental tradition is real — do not treat RFMF as a small force making symbolic contributions. They are globally deployed professionals with a warrior tradition behind them.
