Korea PCS: Things I wish someone had told me before orders dropped

Just got back from Camp Humphreys (USAG Humphreys). Unaccompanied tour, 12 months. Not going to sugarcoat it, but also not going to be dramatic. Here's what actually matters: 1. The base is massive and modern. Do not believe the horror stories from guys who were there pre-2018. 2. Housing is fine. Food courts are fine. MWR is actually decent. 3. The isolation is real. You need to proactively build a social network or you will spend a year eating alone and playing video games. Both options exist. Choose wisely. 4. Korean economy is awesome. Food is cheap and incredible. Get off post on weekends. 5. Language barrier is manageable in Pyeongtaek. Most service industry speaks enough English. 6. Time difference makes family calls difficult. Establish a schedule early. Happy to answer questions. Don't let the doom and gloom crowd make it worse than it is.
