DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Schofield Barracks vs Fort Stewart

Army, HI vs Army, GA

The Intel

Schofield Barracks: "25th ID: Pineapple Express to Poverty." Fort Stewart: "3rd ID: Sand Gnats, Swamp, and Savannah on Weekends." Same flag overhead. Different reasons to salute it through gritted teeth.

The whole-family version of this comparison: Fort Stewart lets you pocket BAH like a financial genius. Schofield Barracks has your spouse checking Zillow, then your LES, then their options. In that order. For spouses: Tourism and hospitality dominate at Schofield Barracks. At Fort Stewart: Very limited in Hinesville. The off-post reality that defines day-to-day life: Wahiawa, HI versus Hinesville, GA. Everything else is logistics.

Same Army. Two duty stations. Universal truth: wherever you land, someone at the other one swears they have it worse. They might be right.

Housing
Island Palm Communities (PPV) manages on-post housing — waitlists 3-6 months. Off-post extremely expensive — $2,200-$3,500 for a 3BR. Mililani, Waipahu, and Ewa Beach more affordable than Honolulu. COLA helps but does not close the gap.
On-post housing (Balfour Beatty) is available with shorter wait times than most posts. Off-post in Hinesville and Richmond Hill is very affordable — $900-$1,200 for a 3BR. Richmond Hill (toward Savannah) is the preferred off-post community.
Spouse Employment
Tourism and hospitality dominate. Federal and contractor jobs competitive. Professional careers limited vs mainland. Remote work for mainland employers increasingly popular.
Very limited in Hinesville. Savannah (45 min) has tourism, healthcare, and port logistics jobs. Many spouses do remote work. The commute to Savannah for work is doable but gets old.
Medical
Tripler Army Medical Center (15 min) — full-service military hospital for all of Hawaii. Excellent care across specialties.
Winn Army Community Hospital — community hospital, not a medical center. Expect referrals to Savannah for anything beyond primary care and basic specialties. Memorial Health in Savannah is the nearest Level I trauma center.
Gate Commute
Lyman Road gate and Foote Gate — H-2 freeway to Honolulu backs up during rush hour. Living in Mililani keeps commutes shorter.
Gate traffic is generally manageable given the post size. The drive between the main cantonment and Hunter Army Airfield (in Savannah) is 45 min and done frequently.
