DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Fort Johnson vs Fort Irwin

Army, LA vs Army, CA

The Intel

Fort Johnson: "The Army's Proof That God Has a Sense of Humor." Fort Irwin: "Congratulations, You Now Live on Mars." Same branch, same oath, two completely different conversations at the FRG meeting.

Honest version: Fort Johnson — JRTC (Joint Readiness Training Center), Unique JRTC training experience, but Consistently rated worst duty station. Fort Irwin — NTC (National Training Center), Unique NTC experience, but Extreme isolation in the Mojave. You'll spend more of your actual life in Leesville, LA or Barstow, CA than on any range. That's worth weighing. Fort Johnson keeps your finances stable. Fort Irwin keeps them "interesting" — and in military finance, "interesting" is never a compliment. Weather: Fort Johnson serves Hot, humid, and buggy year-round. Fort Irwin counters with Extreme desert — 120°F summers, cold winters. Your uniform was designed for approximately neither.

Both will change you. One with scenery, the other with stories. The stories outlast everything.

Housing
On-post housing is available with short wait times. Off-post in Leesville and DeRidder is extremely affordable — $600-$900 for a 3BR. Housing stock is older and basic. Many families choose on-post to avoid the sparse surroundings.
On-post housing is the only option — nothing exists nearby. Housing is adequate but dated. Post has commissary, PX, and basic amenities because it must be self-contained.
Spouse Employment
Almost nonexistent. Leesville has minimal job opportunities beyond on-post civilian positions and retail. Remote work is the only viable option for professional spouses. This is the single biggest quality-of-life complaint.
Nonexistent off-post. On-post civilian jobs only. Remote work is the only viable path. Many spouses do not relocate for this assignment.
Medical
Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital — community hospital with basic services. Adequate for primary care and routine procedures. Complex cases go to Alexandria (1 hr) or Shreveport (2.5 hrs). Medical access is a common complaint.
Weed Army Community Hospital — basic services. Serious cases transport to Las Vegas or San Bernardino. Isolation makes emergencies stressful.
Gate Commute
Main gate — minimal traffic. The post is in the middle of nowhere. The real issue is the distance to anything useful — Alexandria (1 hr) is the nearest small city.
Main gate — one way in, one way out via a long desert road from I-15. No traffic, but the 45-min drive to Barstow for anything is the real commute.
