DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Fort Liberty vs Joint Base Lewis-McChord

Army, NC vs Army, WA

The Intel

Fort Liberty is the Army's SOF nexus — more lethal organizations per square mile than anywhere outside a Tom Clancy novel. JBLM is arguably the most naturally beautiful installation in the Army inventory, which is a low bar, but JBLM clears it significantly.

Fort Liberty stacks 82nd Airborne, Delta, JSOC, and Special Forces into a post that has always been about operational pedigree over livability — and Fayetteville has always been honest about that arrangement. JBLM answers with I Corps, 75th Ranger Regiment, and 1st Special Forces Group, so the unit quality argument is genuinely close at the top. Cost of living is where the gap opens: Fort Liberty is cheap, Fayetteville is affordable, BAH builds savings. JBLM is expensive and getting more so, because Tacoma has figured out it's a Seattle suburb and priced accordingly. But you're buying Mount Rainier visible from the installation, the Pacific Northwest trail system out the back gate, and Seattle-Tacoma International 25 minutes away. Fort Liberty has Raleigh 90 minutes north — a legitimately strong city with real professional depth. But JBLM has the Pacific Northwest, which is a landscape and a lifestyle that Army veterans spend decades trying to get back to.

Maximum unit prestige at minimum cost versus maximum natural beauty at maximum BAH stretch. Two of the most operationally serious posts in the Army, separated by every other variable that defines whether you enjoy the years between deployments.

Housing
Massive on-post housing (Corvias managed) with mixed reviews on maintenance. Off-post in Spring Lake and Southern Pines. Fayetteville rent is very affordable — $1,000-$1,400 for a 3BR.
On-post housing exists but waitlists are common (3-6 months). Off-post in Lacey, Olympia, and DuPont is more affordable than Tacoma proper. Expect $1,600-$2,200 for a 3BR off-post. JBLM BAH is decent but cost of living is rising fast.
Spouse Employment
Limited professional jobs in Fayetteville. Raleigh (1 hr) has a strong job market. Many spouses work on-post or remote. Healthcare and education jobs available locally.
Strong job market in the Tacoma-Seattle corridor — tech, healthcare, logistics, and government. Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing all within commuting distance. Remote work culture is well-established in the PNW.
Medical
Womack Army Medical Center — full hospital with most specialties. Can be overwhelmed due to post size. Referrals to Cape Fear Valley or Raleigh for complex care.
Madigan Army Medical Center — one of the best Army hospitals in the system. Full service with most specialties. Rarely need off-post referrals.
Gate Commute
Multiple gates reduce bottlenecks, but All American Expressway gate and Bragg Blvd gate back up during PT release. Post is massive — cross-post commutes can be 20-30 min.
JBLM main gate off I-5 can back up at morning PT release. I-5 itself is the bigger problem — Seattle traffic is infamous and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a bottleneck. Living south of post (Lacey/Olympia) avoids the worst of it.
