DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Fort Cavazos vs Fort Campbell

Army, TX vs Army, KY

The Intel

Fort Campbell: "Air Assault — Where Helicopters Are Angry Ubers." Fort Cavazos: "The Great Place (Citation Needed)." Same branch, different DNA — one flies its troops in, the other rolls in on tanks. Both have strong opinions about the other's choice.

Fort Campbell is the 101st Airborne — air assault, not airborne, a distinction that matters to people who care — plus the Night Stalkers of 160th SOAR, arguably the most elite aviation unit in the world, and 5th Special Forces Group. Fort Cavazos is the 1st Cavalry Division and III Corps headquarters, armor and combined arms, the kind of post that smells like diesel and runs on institutional pride. Cost of living at both is low; BAH covers housing with savings to spare at either installation. The real decision is the off-post reality: Nashville versus Austin. Fort Campbell puts you an hour from Nashville — live music, hot chicken, and a city that genuinely overdelivers for its size. Fort Cavazos puts you 75 minutes from Austin, which has a legitimate argument for being better. Both spouses are doing the same math: can I build something in Clarksville or Killeen while the unit is deployed?

Two low-cost posts with elite pedigrees, two Army towns outside the gate, and two major cities within driving distance that are both genuinely good. This is one of the Army's better coin-flip assignments.

Housing
On-post housing (Lendlease managed) is extensive but maintenance complaints are common. Off-post in Killeen and Harker Heights is very affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. Copperas Cove is quieter but farther from main gate.
On-post housing (Lendlease) has newer and older sections — quality varies wildly. Off-post Clarksville is very affordable, $1,000-$1,400 for a 3BR. Oak Grove, KY (south of post) is even cheaper but very small.
Spouse Employment
Killeen job market is limited and heavily military-dependent. Austin (1 hr) has a booming tech job market. Remote work is the most common path for professional spouses.
Clarksville has growing retail and healthcare jobs. Nashville (1 hr) has a much stronger job market — healthcare, music industry, tech. Many spouses commute or work remote.
Medical
Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center — full hospital. Wait times can be long due to post size. Scott & White in Temple (30 min) is an excellent civilian alternative.
Blanchfield Army Community Hospital — full hospital but can be stretched thin during deployment cycles. Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville (1 hr) for anything complex.
Gate Commute
Main gate (Clear Creek) backs up heavily at PT release and COB. Post is enormous — 15-20 min drives between unit areas are normal. T.J. Mills gate is less congested.
Gate 4 (101st Airborne Division Road) is the main bottleneck — expect 15-25 min waits at peak. The post straddles TN/KY state line, which complicates taxes. Cross-post drives are long.
