DUTY STATION COMPARISON

Fort Bliss vs Fort Riley

Army, TX vs Army, KS

The Intel

Fort Bliss: "El Paso: Great Food, Eternal Motor Pool, No Shade." Fort Riley: "The Big Red One in the Big Red Nothing." One shows up in the recruiter's slideshow. The other shows up in your therapist's notes.

Honest version: Fort Bliss — 1st Armored Division, El Paso food scene is outstanding, but Desert isolation. Fort Riley — 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), Manhattan, KS has a college-town vibe, but Remote — Kansas City 2+ hours away. You'll spend more of your actual life in El Paso, TX or Junction City, KS than on any range. That's worth weighing. Cost of living at both: low. If you can't build savings at either of these, the zip code isn't the problem. Climate duel: Desert — scorching summers, mild winters, very dry at Fort Bliss versus Hot summers, cold windy winters, tornado season at Fort Riley. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season.

Same Army. Two duty stations. Universal truth: wherever you land, someone at the other one swears they have it worse. They might be right.

On-post housing (Corvias) is decent and avoids the commute. Off-post in Junction City is very affordable — $700-$1,000 for a 3BR. Manhattan, KS (home of K-State) has nicer options but slightly higher rent.
Spouse Employment
El Paso job market is limited but growing — healthcare, education, and defense contractors. Many spouses work on-post or remote.
Limited locally. Manhattan has some opportunities through K-State (university jobs, research). Junction City is primarily military-dependent economy. Remote work is the best option for professional spouses.
Medical
William Beaumont Army Medical Center — brand new facility (opened 2021), full hospital with excellent capabilities. One of the better Army medical facilities in the system.
Irwin Army Community Hospital — community hospital with basic specialties. Complex cases are referred to Topeka or Kansas City. Expect some drive time for specialist appointments.
Gate Commute
Post is massive — one of the largest by area. Cross-post commutes can be 25-30 min. Buffalo Soldier gate and Cassidy gate are the main entry points. Traffic is generally manageable by Army standards.
Gate traffic is generally light. The bigger issue is the on-post distances and the 15-20 min drive between Junction City and Manhattan. Winter wind chill makes any outdoor commute miserable.
