Tyndall AFB sits on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrew Bay, twelve miles east of Panama City. The base was catastrophically damaged by Hurricane Michael in 2018 and has been undergoing a $4.9 billion reconstruction — a massive, ongoing effort to rebuild into a "Base of the Future."

The reconstruction means new facilities but also years of construction disruption. Some on-base amenities are still being restored. Off-base, though, Panama City is classic Florida Panhandle: white-sand beaches, warm Gulf water, and a mix of family tourism and fishing culture.

Tyndall is home to F-22 Raptors and the 325th Fighter Wing. The surrounding area has world-class diving in a clear spring system (Florida Caverns), and the Emerald Coast beaches extend west toward Fort Walton and Destin.

Firefly (Panama City Beach)

Seafood
$$$

"PCB's finest dinner. Fresh Gulf seafood executed well."

Firefly is consistently rated the best restaurant in the Panama City area — Gulf-fresh seafood, an excellent wine list, and service that outpaces the beach town's usual standards. Make reservations.

Gulf of Mexico Diving

Scuba Diving
$$

"Artificial reefs, wrecks, and warm clear water."

The Panama City area has one of the most active artificial reef programs in the Gulf — dozens of wrecks and structures visible in 50-80 feet of clear water. The USS Oriskany (aircraft carrier) is 24 miles offshore and one of the premier dives on the Gulf Coast.

Insider

The USS Oriskany dive requires advanced certification and a dive boat. Panama City Dive Center and Emerald Coast Scuba are the established local operators.

Destin / Fort Walton Beach75 mi

Apalachicola, FL75 mi

"The oyster capital of Florida. Historic river town."

Apalachicola is a beautifully preserved Victorian fishing town on Apalachicola Bay — the oysters here are the finest in Florida and the downtown architecture rivals anything in the panhandle. St. George Island is just across the bridge.

oystershistoricbeachfoodweekend
New Orleans, LA300 mi

"Five hours west. Worth a long weekend."

New Orleans is achievable as a long weekend from Tyndall — French Quarter, Frenchmen Street jazz, Commander's Palace, and the most distinctive city culture in the United States. Go for Mardi Gras if your assignment allows.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

Tyndall is still rebuilding from Hurricane Michael. Check what on-base facilities are operational before assuming anything is available.

02

St. Andrews State Park fills to capacity on summer weekends. Arrive before 9am or go on a weekday.

03

The USS Oriskany dive is a bucket-list experience for certified divers. Book a charter early — slots fill fast in spring and fall.

04

The Emerald Coast's white sand is actually quartz crystal washed down from Appalachian Mountains — it stays cool even in summer heat.

05

Stone crab claw season (October-May) is a Florida Panhandle event. Hunt's Oyster Bar will have them when in season.

Honest Warning

Tyndall is still in active reconstruction and some base facilities won't be fully operational for years. Spring Break turns Panama City Beach into spring break central (March) — the crowds and atmosphere are genuinely overwhelming. Off-season beach life is infinitely better. The tourist economy means everything is expensive in summer.
