Best Seasons
Cherry blossom season (late March-early April) is exceptional in the Kanto region

Naval Air Facility Atsugi sits in Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture — 40 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, 30 kilometers from Yokohama, and within viewing distance of Mount Fuji on clear days. It's a carrier air wing home station, hosting the aircraft that deploy aboard USS Ronald Reagan. The mission is serious Pacific aviation support, but the location is extraordinary.

Atsugi is situated in the Kanto Plain, Japan's most densely populated and urbanized region. Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Nikko, and the Fuji Five Lakes are all within 90-minute reach. The Odakyu Line from Yamato connects directly to Shinjuku in about 50 minutes — one of Tokyo's major hubs. The base community uses Tokyo regularly in a way that most OCONUS postings don't allow.

The community around Atsugi is suburban Japan — densely populated, efficient, and entirely Japanese-language by default. The contrast between on-base American life and the Japanese world immediately outside the gate is sharp and constant. If you engage with Japan rather than retreating to the base, the assignment is one of the best in DoD.

The Kanto region's ramen is soy-based (shoyu) and tonkotsu. Nearly every neighborhood in Yamato has a serious ramen shop. Find the one near your neighborhood and go weekly.

"The world's greatest seafood market. 50 minutes from Atsugi."

The outer market (accessible to the public) has fresh seafood, sushi shops, tamago, and the best tuna don (tuna over rice) you will eat in your life. Arrive before 10am.

Insider

The inner market moved to Toyosu but the outer market remains and is still exceptional. The thick tamago yaki (sweet egg) on a stick from the stalls is mandatory.

Kid OK

"The basement food floors of Japanese department stores are extraordinary."

Every major department store (Odakyu in Shinjuku, Isetan, Mitsukoshi) has a basement floor of extraordinary prepared food, pastries, sweets, and deli. Intimidatingly good, reasonably priced for prepared food.

Insider

Shinjuku Odakyu department store depachika is one of the best accessible from Atsugi. Arrive at opening to avoid lunch crowds.

"Japanese tabletop BBQ — thinner cuts, better quality control than Korean."

Yakiniku is Japan's version of tabletop grilling — wagyu beef, tongue, offal, and vegetables grilled over charcoal. More restrained than Korean BBQ but equally addictive.

Insider

Salt and lemon is the correct preparation for tongue. Don't overthink the order — the menu at any yakiniku restaurant will guide you.

Enter the interior of the Buddha statue for a small additional fee. The temples between Kita-Kamakura and Kamakura stations on the hiking trail between them are worth 3-4 hours.

Mount Fuji Climbing

Mountain Climbing
$$

"Climb Japan's sacred mountain. Season is July-August."

From the 5th Station (accessible by bus from Kawaguchiko), the summit climb is 6-7 hours up, 4-5 hours down. Altitude sickness is real above 3,000m. Sunrise from the summit is worth every step.

Insider

Start the night climb around midnight to reach the summit at sunrise. Bring more layers than you think you need — it's cold at the top in August.

Shinjuku's east side (Golden Gai, Kabukicho, Omoide Yokocho) for nightlife and atmosphere. Shibuya crossing and the youth culture. Asakusa for the traditional temple and Nakamise market. You could spend every weekend in Tokyo for 3 years and not repeat.

Insider

Odakyu Line from Yamato to Shinjuku is direct. IC card (Suica or Pasmo) on all trains. Navigate with Google Maps in Japan — it handles train transfers better here than anywhere.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

Suica IC card from any JR station vending machine. Add it to Apple Wallet for tap-to-pay on trains, conbini, and many restaurants. Japan is more cashless than you expect.

02

Noise discipline matters profoundly in Japan. American exuberance on trains is noticed and unwelcome. Indoor voice, headphones for audio, no phone calls on trains.

03

Japanese allergies and dietary restrictions are difficult to communicate. Bring allergy translation cards (available through the base medical community) for serious food allergies.

04

The Odakyu Express from Yamato to Shinjuku is about 50 minutes. Learn the train system first — it connects everything.

05

Typhoon season (June-October) brings genuine storms. Base lockdown procedures are serious. Have supplies and follow base guidance.

Honest Warning

Tokyo proximity is a trap if you spend all your yen in the city rather than managing your budget. Japan is more expensive than most OCONUS postings for discretionary spending. COLA is generous but Tokyo leisure spending can exceed it. Build a real budget and stick to it — the assignment is worth managing carefully financially.
