You will spend the majority of your deployment standing next to an officer who doesn't trust your translation, translating things he then questions, while the local national you're interpreting for watches both of you with the patient exhaustion of someone who has been doing this since before you were born. Your language proficiency score determines everything about your quality of life, and the Army will expect you to maintain fluency while assigning you to administrative tasks that have nothing to do with language. The cultural nuance you spent years developing will be boiled down to 'just tell him what I said, don't editorialize.' The counterintelligence guys will treat you like a suspect.
